Rye Miles #13621 Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Anyone have one of these? I saw one today at a local gunshop for a VERY good price! http://www.rossiusa.com/product-details.cfm?id=215&category=16&toggle=&breadcrumbseries=
Goody, SASS #26190 Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I know a guy who bought one in 30-30. He has not had very good luck with it.
Cpt Dan Blodgett, SASS #75655 Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 They have always intrigued me. Wondering if with a 20 in barrel the rifle would be a rather savage beast especially when loaded for Bear like Alaskan Brown bears. Please if anyone has one let us know how it shoots, and how badly it gets your attention when the trigger is pulled.
Rooster Ron Wayne Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 With some work they smooth up OK. Not bad for the money if your willing to do the work yourself.
Nate Kiowa Jones #6765 Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 The Rio is basically a 336/1895 Marlin style action. They can be a bit bumpy out of the box but with a little work they do smooth up nicely. The 45-70 version handles and kicks muck like the Marlin guide guns.
Rye Miles #13621 Posted October 16, 2014 Author Posted October 16, 2014 Thanks guys….they only wanted $469.00 brand new for this gun. Hmmmmm…………...
Sedalia Dave Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 If you want I can PM you a nice easy recoil load for the 45-70. I shoot it in both my 1874 sharps and my 1895 Marlin. With 350 grain bullets it chronoed at 1175. Same load is also good for 405, 500 and 535 grain bullets. You can easily up the charge for more velocity and recoil as your needs require.

Thanks Dave, but I have a good recipe myself with black powder!!
Cpt Dan Blodgett, SASS #75655 Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Kicking like a mule is not unexpected, what kind of groups can one expect at 100 yards?
Rye Miles #13621 Posted October 17, 2014 Author Posted October 17, 2014 I just want to hit the steel plate at 100 yards, not going for accuracy per se, I don't think this gun will be good for lead bullets let alone black powder. So I'm gonna pass on it. Thanks for all the responses though! Rye
Chili Ron Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 Howdy, A friend of mine has a short barrel single shot in 45-70. It has brutal recoil. Im not used to getting kicked like that and it was a very unpleasant surprise. Probably my least favorite event shooting. Try before you buy. As I have back problems I should have never tried it but of course he just kept harping on me. I really thought about just throwing it down on the ground. I would have enjoyed the yelling that would have followed. And no he aint a sass pard. Best CR
