Lead Ringer Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Looking for folks who have used 700-X powder for cowboy, wild bunch and low recoil shotgun loads. Thanks Ringer
Randy Saint Eagle, SASS # 64903 Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Ringer, I know Papa Dave uses it but I don't know anything about it. If it keeps up we may all be experimenting with anything we can find. See you in a couple weeks at the Tennessee State Match. Randy
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Std SG powder for trap/skeet. Don't over look Unique for SG loads. LG
Waimea Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Good stuff. Got a little more kick to it than Clays (used to). I had 2# of it last year and it worked fine in .38 cal. Waimea
Jackrabbit Joe #414 Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Yo Lead Ringer have used it in .38 pistol, rifle and shotgun's 12 gauge. Good powder, performance. Can contact me @ jgp3749@cox.net Jackrabbit
Lead Ringer Posted October 7, 2014 Author Posted October 7, 2014 Ringer, I know Papa Dave uses it but I don't know anything about it. If it keeps up we may all be experimenting with anything we can find. See you in a couple weeks at the Tennessee State Match. Randy Well that's why I'm asking about it. I Hear good things about 700-X. Just haven't ever loaded it.I'll have 20 cans for sale at the Tennessee state match. Looking forward to the shoot Randy. Ringer
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 I've used a lot of 700-X in light .45 Colt and C45S loads (as well as .45 auto for WB). Not quite as clean as some powders. Does not meter real precisely because of its larger flake size. But, it works great. Usually very accurate. Fantastic in light shotshell loads. Several good shooters here in NM use it almost exclusively. Good luck, GJ
Hans Christian Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 The family has used it off and on over the years. It is our 'go to' powder for light 44 Special and 44 magnum loads. We recently discovered a partial keg (about 5 pounds) that an old shotgunner had. It's 1970's vintage, but it's still good. With Clays and Trailboss tough to find, I worked up Cowboy loads in 38 Special and 45 Colt. IMHO, it's slightly easier to measure and slightly dirtier than those two powders and cartridges respectively. I settled on a 38 load slightly above the starting load listed at Hodgdons website to get a complete burn. It would seem to be a good substitute for Clays - especially with the current shortage.
Captain Clark Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Have used it for years in 45 colt. Excellent for long range side match ammo and " knock down " type loads!
Cowboy Junky Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 I had a friend using it.....we took it to the range and chrono'd it. It was very similar to Clays grain for grain just a touch hotter. I Doubt you could feel any difference after the beep. We were loading in the 725FPS range with 105's in the pistols and 1000 to 1100 FPS in the rifle. Same 105 that's what this shooter's uses in the rifle. It would work really well for ya'. See you there.
Bugler Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Has replaced Unique for 700x because Unique is non-existent.............
Lead Ringer Posted October 8, 2014 Author Posted October 8, 2014 Thanks for the good input on 700-X powder. Regards, Ringer
Oklahoma Dee Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Started with it, in Cowboy Action shooting. good powder. As I began to shoot and practise more, the dirty side began to show. Tried Clays and it was mucho cleaner. OkD
Cassalong Hopidy Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Well that's why I'm asking about it. I Hear good things about 700-X. Just haven't ever loaded it. I'll have 20 cans for sale at the Tennessee state match. Looking forward to the shoot Randy. Ringer LR I have followed your wining ways online for a while and look forward to meeting you at the Tennessee match--and you can probably some of that 700-x to me.
Ned Plinkerton, SASS #41905 Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Hey Ringer! 700x has been my powder of choice for 20 years. 20 gg, 12gg, .45 acp, .45 colt, .357 mag, .38 spl.. the density makes it very cost efficient. It meters well through any powder measure Ive run it through. And the big reason, it burns cleaner than anything ive tried or seen. Consistent burn rates in varying temps, and did I say it burns clean? And it also burns very clean! Email me if you want me to tell you how clean it burns, or if you want some load data, although data is available from Dupont IMR, or recently Hogdon. Hogdon bought the name (I think) and currently marketing it. You can reach me at 700xburnsclean.com, or nedplinkerton@yahoo.com
Tom Bullweed Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 I used a pound of it recently in .44 Special and .45 Cowboy Special. It metered okay but had the same results as Clays for me: smudged brass and sooty chambers. I prefer RedDot or AA#2, but I would buy it and feel comfortable at a CAS match, knowing that the clean-up of the brass and chambers would take extra work. Other cartridges may be better suited to 700-X, and I did not have enough to really work out the optimal load.
Major Hazzard, SASS #23254 Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Have used it for years in 45 colt. Excellent for long range side match ammo and " knock down " type loads! Same here. Great powder for no-nonsense .45 Colt loads. Be all you can be, baby.
Sierra Steve Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Have reloaded 38 Sp for cowboy events this past year with it. No special problems, meters OK too. I think it's a little messier to clean up than others I've tried. The last year or two I've used mostly 700X and Trail Boss because I'm trying to conserve the few other powders I still have left. Has been very hard to find reload powders of choice.
