For the second year I get to be the 'awards' guy--it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, barely

SASS + local categories get us up to 40+ events.

We know not all categories will be awarded but how in darnation do we deal with which ones will be needed at our event.

We can guess on some: Senior, Cowboy and the like but what about Lady Senior Gunfighter? might or might not make it (we have decided that we have to have 3 in a category for a 1st place and more for a 2nd and 3rd.

No way to have all them made up and not have a lot left over

No way not to have them if the category makes.

my solution is to trade jobs for food prep. but there must be another way(s) to handle awards

thanks

cr

sorry if this is a dead horse item--it sure isn't for me

HI Ranger,

A couple of local matches (including the Regional) have medals on a ribbon. They put a label on the back with the category and place. They use the same medals every year. That way there are always enough and never any leftovers that cannot be used the next year.

Regards,

You can use the computer to print up nice paper awards.. They have programs that make up nice Certificate type awards on regular printing paper.

Put them in a dollar strore pic frame, and away ya go, looks nice, costs very, very little, and people seem to like ,if ya don't use one then wad it up and in the can, keep the frames that are left over for next yr..

You can then give the Certificate type awards for Cats. that don't meet whatever standard you have set for a wood plaque, or buckle, that way you have everyone covered..

Just an idea, I've seen these used alot for speed side match awards, they are well recived...

Spades H. Maybe someone will chime in as to what the program ,or software ,that is used to make these..

Set a deadline date for signup for category.

This date is for buying awards.

That date is decided by your award maker.

What is the last date they need award count.

Entries after that date will be accepted but there will be no award other than the paper framed certificates if your category did not meet the minimum number needed for awards.

Brimstone Pistoleros has been using the metal and ribbon awards for years.

We have a computer to do scoring at the match and it will print out what ever you want on the clean sticky labels to be put on the back of the metal.

If you have some fast on the keyboard, you can even put the name of the person receiving the award on it.

Seems to me, at the SW Regional shoot over at the Badlands Bar 3 Ranch, for the main match, it was buckles - 1st - 10th, that depended on how many were in the catagory. Then more awards depending on High Female and Male. Then a buckle for overall....

Paper don't cut it at a Regional. As said by others, have a cut off date and plan accordingly. Shooters pay alot of money to participate and travel, they deserve something nice in return for their efforts.

I attended the outlaw trail the four corners regional put on by sass the weekend before last. I was interested how they would handle the awards and placing since a bunch of the shooter were from out of the region. They acknowledged the regional winner and if they were not the first place shooter they also acknowledged the first place shooter with an award. They handled it the way I felt it should be handled. They went three deep iirc and started at the bottom. Same with overall you had an regional winner and a overall winner if they were not the same. I could have won a regional category by just shooting it if I would have switched cats because the shooters in that cat were from out of region. If awards were you interest and you had the right equipment you could have got one.

I've been to other shoots years ago where they only awarded the top shooter no matter where they were from and not the top shooters for that section. I thought it was wrong then and still do.

I prefer the wood lazer ingraved plaques, make nice wall hangers. All you have to do each year is add the brass plate at the bottom with the correct year (and category if you wish). Those that go unused are ready for next year ;) . Good Luck :)

Many of the larger shoots give out awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in category and then a TOP TEN (or TOP FIVE) award un-categorized for the balance of the winning shooters.

You need a cutoff date for registration filing so you know what categories for which you are going to need awards.

I would also recommend a regional championship award of some sort for each category to recognize the REGIONAL Champion.

Take it easy there pards!!! :o In case there was trouble comprehending my suggestion.( 3rd sentence of my original post ) <_<

Maybe I should clarify (The Certiifcate type awards would be for Cats. that did'nt make the cut for a BIGGER TYPE AWARD IE: WOOD PLAQUE OR BUCKLE award) ;);) I belive he said at least 3 per Cat. to recive a 1st place award , ok then give 2nd and 3rd as the Cert. type thats all.

Cats. with only ( 2 ) give Cert awards 1st and 2nd real cheap, i WOULD SAY THE FOLKS IN THESE TYPE 2 MAN CATS. SPENT THE SAME $$$ AND TIME TO BE THERE AND COMPETE. they might not even know untill the last day if there will enough in there Cat. if there is no cutoff date!!!! At least a nicely done Cert. in a plaque says thanx fer comin...

( And yes a cutoff date is a must to cover the bigger type awards, these are not last min things that can be done in most cases.)

Spades H. Put the rope back!! <_< Nobody said give just paper awards!!!!!!!!

This year for each catagory winner at the S.W. Regionals we will be giving away a pair of custom made Chaps from Docs old West. All top 10 in each catagory will recieve a buckle. Each pair of chaps where made different and unique. Regional Overall will get SASS Buckles and Top overall get a larger award. Just a little something we do in Texas....

As Allie mentioned, my home club paid the one-time set-up fee for our personalized medal. They are available in gold, silver, and bronze color. The other side is flat and will accept a round hard plastic "sticker" that can be engraved to say whatever you want. Unused ones can have the sticker removed and the medal can be used for next year. At this years Regional, the sticker read "Top Ten" for those not in the top three.
