Model 12 loading problem

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd ask those who are more familiar with this shotgun. My dad has a 20 ga Model 12 and can load it one at a time but it will not pick up anything from the tube. He thinks it should be an easy fix but I'm not familiar with it.

I haven't looked at it yet, he wanted me to see if anyone here would have an idea.

The shell lifter has to be BELOW the head of the first cartridge. So, you have to push the last round into the magazine in order to let the lifter fall all the way down. If my description doesn't do it for you, Google "loading Winchester Model 12".

The M-12 doesn't load like a '97 -- or any other pump gun I'm familiar with.

Rev - agree with Grists for rust in the tube and on the spring for the starting point.

But watch any of the disassemble videos before you begin. Because unless you've take one apart and DON"T FIDDLE WITH THE TRIGGER ASSEMBLY- your going to scratch your head a few times

Here's a paper instruction also ... http://stevespages.com/pdf/winchester_12.pdf

Here's a parts diagram.

http://www.nulineguns.com/schematics/model12/

(click in upper left section of parts to get the carrier and trigger assembly parts)

Carrier doesn't pop all the way down to pickup a new shell from mag? Could be a broken carrier spring. Pretty common.

Part USR10912 on NuLine's diagram. It should be attached to the back end of the carrier (lifter). Should be a V shape if in one piece. And an I and a J shape if broken in two pieces.

To test, empty gun. Turn upside down. Slowly run slide backward to open action. Carrier should immediately (as soon as bolt starts to retract) snap down all the way to bottom of receiver to be able to catch the next round when tip of carrier drops below the shell rim. Now run forearm forward to close action. Carrier should lift to bring up the new a new shell, then back down most of the way as the bolt goes into battery.

Also, make sure the cutoff can clear the way for the first shell in mag to escape onto the carrier when the carrier tip drops, but that the cutoff catches the second shell coming out and holds it in the mag tube. A badly bent cutoff or gummed up or worn out can keep even the first shell from getting out of the magazine tube if it is not moving properly to let a shell out.

The Firearms Assembly, NRA Guide to Rifles and Shotguns Revised and Expanded has both a great diagram and disassembly instructions for the Model 12.

Good luck, GJ

Hi Rev,

I just got a 12. Hubby showed me the trick to loading it; but I've forgotten... That was over a week ago and I still haven't shot it. There is a special technique though. If you don't figure it out, let me know and I'll try to p-p-p-practice and see if I can explain it.

Here's a video, if you can stand to listen to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tob90K-ywV0

Thanks all! I told dad to check it and he thinks its the carrier (I think it may be the carrier spring) but I'll have to wait till Fri night to go down and check myself. That will give me time to check the disassembly and parts before I go fiddle with it.

I really expected it to be just like any other pump but I've found these things are a bit more finicky. Its best to ask the experts.

I really want to shoot this thing and see how I like it over the 97. I think I've shot my 97 only a couple of times.
