Train Robber 13659
Just picked up an 1849 Colt and wondered if the conversion cylinder sold by Taylors would work. Also have an original Remington pocket 31 factory conversion to 32 rimfire and wondered if the cylinder intended for the Piettas could be fitted . thanks, Train Robber
Tom Bullweed
Original guns are made of iron (with possible steel screws). Iron is much softer than steel and may not handle the pressures, even with BP loads. My BP cartridges loads go bang, while my cap-n-ball loads go whoosh, probably due to a difference in the caps. Even if they fit, this would be hard use for guns that are probably worth $1000 or more if they are in working condition.
Utah Bob #35998
Iron? No. The original were steel. Many Colts wrre convertedin the1870s to fire bp cartridges. But a modern made conversion cylinder will not fit an original gun. The repros are close but not exact matches. It would take some expert work to make one fit. Train Robber 13659
Thanks Bob. None of my local pards have cylinders I could measure and compare . BTW I am of the opinion that BP loads with a round ball and a bit of filler are fine for original guns. A BP catridge loaded similarly would also be fine in my opinion.
