The family of a man who used a semi-automatic rifle to kill an Indianapolis police officer Saturday night says it isn’t fair that the alleged shooter – Major Davis, Jr. – should “keep being dragged through the mud.” They also blamed the officer for not staying in his police car.

As reported by WISH-TV, Davis was seen brandishing a semi-automatic rifle Saturday night in Indianapolis, which led to a 911 call that dispatched police to look for him:

When IMPD Officer Perry Renn found Davis at 34th Street and Forest Manor Avenue, Davis opened fire on Officer Renn. Davis was critically wounded in the gunfight, but survived. Officer Renn died of wounds sustained in the firefight. Davis now faces a charge of murder.

Davis’ family has now spoken out about the murder – and basically blamed Officer Renn and the Indianapolis Police Department for the shooting:

“He wasn’t a bad person. His father was killed by IMPD. That is enough to hurt a person and scar him for life,” said Davis’ grandmother, Pam Moornan.

The facts, as reported by BearingArms.com:

Davis’ father, Major Davis, Sr. had been arrested 15 times and did three years in prison on a drug charge. He died of a heart attack in 2003 while in handcuffs after fighting with police as he attempted to avoid a public intoxication charge.

More from WISH-TV:

“Major is not a bad person in spite of what happened. Things happen,” said Pam Moornan.

“I don’t know how the police was [sic] shooting. I don’t know if they took concern of any kids running around,” said Yvonne Moornan.

The family said it “felt sorry” for Officer Renn’s family, but that the shooting may have been avoided if he had stayed in his car since he could see Davis had a gun. Incidentally, the alleged killer has an extensive criminal background that dates back to 2006.

I'm guessing it is against department policy to shoot from inside the car.

And apparently against family policy to teach or assume personal responsiblilty, let alone to exercise common sense.

Unbelievable...

Since I can cuss for real on my Facebook page, I let it all out there, but that family made me very very angry earthman

Poor Mr. Davis. Killed a cop. Cop shouldn't have got out of his car and made the boy shoot him. He's such a good boy. He just had his little rifle. What else could he do? Poor Mr. Davis. Bless his heart!

So, if he'd shot someone, it would have been their fault for being outside? Or if he had shot someone indoors, they shouldn't have been home? Let me guess, if those people just hadn't had money, he wouldn't have committed those robberies or burglaries either...

If Davis hAdn't got out of HIS car and fired on other people he wouldn't be wounded and facing a murder charge.

TURN IT AROUND AND THROW IT RIGHT BACK IN THEIR FACES!

Yeah and IF she would have raised her son to be a productive member of society instead of a ghetto hoodlum ...

This incident.

The "My cousin didn't deserve to be shot just because he was committing armed robbery of a Waffle House!" incident.

And at least one more of the "My (insert relative) was a nice guy! Never in any trouble! Turning his life around! Just because he pulled a gun on someone doesn't give that person a right to shoot him!"

Anyone seeing a trend?

How about charging the whole damn family as accessories.

On a serious note, I bet we'd have a lot less crime in this country if we held people accountable, that failed in their basic responsibility to prevent family from committing crimes...

Joe, it's more than the three incidents you mentioned. It's everywhere, all the time. I lost a friend in the line of duty on December 4, 2006, and the dirtbag's family went on TV and made almost the exact same statements about what a "good boy" he was and "would never hurt anyone" (besides killing a cop, of course).

Every time I'm forced to use force against someone their family says the same thing. I should have handled it differently, it was my fault, because he is a "good boy." This even happened when the "good boy," a trained MMA fighter, told me he was going to disarm me and kill me with my own gun, and then tried to do it. Groundfighting an MMA fighter who is trying to disarm me is not my idea of a good time, and I broke my hand knocking him out.

What I meant was that now besides the pro forma "he was a good boy" song, we are hearing a new one, "just because he pulled a gun and was threatening people is no reason to shoot him" or some other statement, as in this case, where it's the fault of the victim, not the thug.

Tommy, me boyo, I was being 100% serious. Hold the families responsible for not taking care of the situation before it gets out of hand.

Families? Seems some segments of our society have a complete breakdown of the family. No good father figures. Children don't know who their father is. Mothers unable or unwilling to cope. Children raising themselves. Sad. So very sad.

Parents, grandparents, siblings, etc...

If you're psycho they ought to catch it and do something about it.

Or face charges of their own.

I'm surprised the two.. ahem..."Reverends"... haven't started another march against po-lice brutality! He is such a good boy!

They're likely gearing up for either the 13 yr old that got shot while holding a very realistic looking toy gun, or for the woman that was beaten by a CHP officer a couple days ago.
