Had been thinking about a personna for SASS. I was sitting in the Midnight Star Resturant/Casino in Deadwood SD. On the wall above my table was the complete outfit (guns & all) from the movie Open Trail. Since this was one of my favorite movies I was talking with a friend about it telling them about the scene right before the gun fight, as they had not seen the movie. We heard someone say it was one of their most favorite roles. We looked up and the owner Kevin Costner was standing there smiling at us. He spoke to us about the movie for a few minutes before leaving. As we finished our meal our server came to the table and told us it was on the house then gave us both a Golden Midnight Star token for the casino. Later that evening I made my decision. By the way I have since received autographed character photos of him and Mr. Duvall from the movie.

I believe you mean Open Range, the movie.

I have curly hair and Gus McCrae is my all time favorite western character. Lately, however, I've been considering changing it to "Colonel Angus".

:FlagAm: Been told since I was a little feller that G-ma on my fathers side was a full blood Abenaki native american who was born on an res in upstate NY. Granpa married her very late in life when it was still not considered legal to be married to someone from another "race". Never met my Granpa but really loved that aged lady when I was little. Heard many tales of life on the res. and what a charmer Granpa was. When I needed an alias it seemed the natural thing to do. When I joined they ( or me ) mispelled the tribe and I never bothered to correct it. This way nobody can get insulted about using a tribal name for alias. :D:D

Ya know fer $15 in goverment cheese ya cud make it o fish al.

Ya could have one of dem one word aliass, ie Phantom, Manatee, Lassiter............Widder :P

PS: Rance

PPS: Fireball, Keystone, Goody, Jefro, Creeker, Ugly, Blackwater

I was born and raised in Battle Creek Michigan - less than a mile from the Kelloggs plant.

So a number of folks suggested breakfast cereal names.

S. C. Npop, Toucan Sam, Froot Loop, etc.

But I knew I wanted a one word name, that would have some meaning to me - and so Creeker was it.

My other choice was Rault - My Grandfathers brother and probably the reason I grew up wanting to be a cowboy.

My Uncle Rault owned a small ranch in California and would come visit us in Michigan wearing his cowboy boots and cowboy hat and he would tell me stories about the west.

I hope they were all true.

Well, I originally wanted Sourdough T but it was taken so I went with my 2nd favorite, which was the best one anyways. My family nickname was Curley. (all my family have nicks) My last name is Cole so it was a natural choice. I even had a wanted poster made at Knotts years ago with the CC name. I also like it cuz I always thought a name should be should have an element that some one can call you by....mine they can call me curley or Cole and I will answer to both.

anyways that is my story

Third generation with the first name "Thomas" all of whom went by either their middle name or a nickname.

Middle name is Alan, so I combined the first initial with it to get Talon (L'Amour is a favorite Western author).

Father's name was James, so Jamison was a natural patronymic.

(he was better known by his middle name, Harold aka "Hal"; Thomas (Howard) was his older twin brother named after my paternal grandfather (aka "Pop" who was a REAL Cowboy before the War).

I was a bit confused as a child regarding who was who...still am.

If anyone has an opportunity to spend time with No Horse, I recommend you ask for the out loud version of the story. Bet I could tell it myself, for that matter!

About 25 years ago my crew was working on a roof 35 feet above the floor. I fell through the skylight 35 feet , hitting a large electrical cabinet. Made this horrible noise ...sounded like CRASH... I worked at the company for another 10 years they called me Crash. So here I am...

Louis Lamour fans know where my alias came from. I was an outlaw gunfighter in the book "Rider of Lost Creek". I was "shot to doll rags" by Kilkenny in the end but rumors of my death were highly exaggerated.

Well all the nieces and nephews call me Big Daddy, why I don't. Marshal came from 24 years with the United States Marshals Service. 16 as a Deputy U.S. Marshal and 8 as the United States Marshal for the Middle District of Louisiana.

Proud of all the nieces and nephews and very proud of the United States Marshals Badge, that says retired.

Before joining SASS I used Cayenne as my alias. Being from south Louisiana where most folks love highly seasoned food, it seemed a natural, as well as being a play on the native tribe Cheyenne. Alas, when formally joining SASS I was told Cayenne was already taken. So I decided to use Cleburne, after a Confederate general I greatly admire for his integrity and courage. Unfortunately Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne didn't survive the War. He was killed leading a frontal assault on Union breastworks at Franklin, Tennessee.

RE: SASS Kicker

My daughter attended End of the Trail in 2011 as a specator to watch her brother, Cody James. It was the first time she had ever seen him shoot and her first SASS event. She had little shooting experience and had only shot a .22 caliber rifle one time prior to this. She decided to get involved. After seeing the brass coming out of the rifles she went to regester the name Brass Kicker, but it had already been taken. After a minor adjustment, SASS Kicker was born. After telling her grandfather of her name, he told her she had better live up to it!

My friend Coulder Youngblood (SASS 707) bought my membership in 1987 as a birthday gift. He submitted "Turkey Creek Johnson" as my alias. It was taken. I was reading "Iron Men" the story of men who worked for Judge Parker in Ft. Smith. Paden Tolbert was one of these men.

I had read a series of historical novels 'The Plainsmen' by Terry C. Johnston, mostly about the indian wars around 1870's. There was a Nez Perce named stick-in-mud and I'm his half brother, of course I also have a sister named stuck-n-mud. :D

My costume is that of a Mexican bandit because I've never seen a fat gun slinger.

My first name is Charles hence Carlos and Murphy is for the blond hair and blue eyes.

Plus, there's a restaurant in N. Ca. where I once lived called Carlos Murphy's.

When I joined SASS part of the suggestion was that you look at significant events in your life. I retired from U.S. Air Force in 2005 after 21 years of flying I in one of the squadron the 15th MAS (Military Airlift Squadron) ferered to as the "Global Eagles" My Call Sign was "Outlaw" but of coarse that was being used. Later when the C-141B was retired, I started to fly with the 550th Special Operations Squadron Flying MC-130H/P Combat Shadows and HC-130P Rescue "Kings" During my time whith rescue the Loadmasters act a scanners searching for Surviors I was credited with 3 saves and with each one someone on the crew said you must have "Eagle Eyes", because they would have never seen either that far or picked that out from the surrounding terrain. I thought about those and couldn't shake the thought. Low-and-Behold, "Eagle Eye Bob" was available and I roped it in. These days I get teased every once and awhile because I can't see the spent brass of the person that just shot his/her stage lol. Oh well, "Age that's are hard one to fight and yes it is the "Eyes that go first, at least for me. Great thread and topic. I love reading all of these.

Howdy Eagle Eye,

I was Air Force 62 to 66, mechanist, tried to cross train to Loadmasters but failed the math portion of the test.

I was a stupid kid, went to night school in San Antonio for two months buy it was more fun to shoot pool and drink beer.

Rode into a small town in Wyoming with several pals from hunting camp and proceeded to get drunk... very drunk...pal takes my horse around back...ties him to a tree..comes in and tells me my horse is stolen..gone. Go to the pay phone (remember those) call the police to report my stolen horse... This is Wyoming in the 70's ...back to the table whining and crying about my rifle...tack...poor me..doing more shots...pal met the cop outside and explained the horse was around back...Cop in a Sam Brown rig and Campaign hat pulls out his clipboard and asks for my full name...The bar is dead quiet as the cop lays down his clipboard...hands on hips and bellows...Looks like young Jim here has lost his pony...the bar cracks up laughing...for twenty years I carried that damn nickname when pals wanted to irritate me...moved back to Texas and 20 years later SASS needed an alias...guess I missed the ribbing..so...Jim No Horse came back from the dead... Think it was Will Rodgers that said everything is funny as long as it happens to someone else... Thanks again for all the great tales...Jim
