"It was very exciting," said Bob Gerhardt, 43, president of the Maryland Civil War Preservation Society, the group responsible for the attack. "We rode in on horseback just after dawn, crossing the Chattahoochee and approaching the city from the west, just as General Sherman did in 1864. We even used the same kind of kerosene as the Union Army. No detail was spared."

The attack began just before 6 a.m., when guests at Atlanta's Peachtree Plaza hotel were awakened by the sound of a cast-iron cannonball blasting through the hotel lobby. Within an hour, the 71-story building was engulfed in flames. By noon, the flames had spread through the entire downtown area.

I had completely forgotten about those Cleveland guys bombing Hiroshima.

Not me. I worked with a couple of the reenactors and that's all they talked about for months afterwards.

Joe, you are just stirring the pot and encouraging them to do it again. Besides, I think the re enactors are out

of atomic bombs... I hope.

Yeah, they are. But last I heard they were withing a couple of tons of having all the incendiaries they need to reenact the March 9 "Operation Meetinghouse" raid on Tokyo. Oh, and need to finish rebuilding a few B-29s.

I understand the Cleveland boys used a taxi cab modified with paper mache to look like the Enola Gay.

USCG! the bane of naval re-enactors.

Don't they have a big reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg over the 4th of July?

Maybe we could do that again with more aircraft?

No, the aircraft are about right, except for the P-61s doing duty as Mitsubishi A6Ms. The real lack is the landing craft to get men across Wheatfield River.

Landing craft are not all that important. They have the Sachs Mill Covered Bridge for attack and logistical support. The fact that it was behind Confederate lines for most of the battle is a minor inconvenience. As General Frederick J. Shortsword once said,

"Make it work"!
