Danger Russ Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 What will happen if I shoot smokeless and BP shells in my Stoeger a the same match? I will be sharing shotgun with my daughter for a while. I shoot Featherlites and I reload light 1/2 oz loads for her. I thought about using Goex for her reloads because she would like the smoke, and because it's easier to get than specific smokeless powder in the current environment But if I shoot the Featherlites and she shoots BP in the same gun, what would happen? Crazy fouling in the barrel? Would the gun make it through the match without cleaning, with both of us shooting it? I can't move to BP for my own shells because I don't have enough components and time yet to load for both of us. If I already had some BP I'd load some just to try in the backyard, but since I'd need to go buy some, I thought I'd ask for educated opinions here first. Thanks!
Wagon Box Willy Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 It'll be fine. The smokeless may even clean out the plastic snot if you use plastic wads in your BP loads.
Wagon Box Willy Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 ....but your shotgun may not want to go back to smokeless after it sees how much fun it is to make smoke and flame
Branchwater Jack SASS #88854 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Ya. What Willy said. No big deal in the scatter gun!
John Henry Quick Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 It'll be fine. The smokeless may even clean out the plastic snot if you use plastic wads in your BP loads. +1 ....but your shotgun may not want to go back to smokeless after it sees how much fun it is to make smoke and flame +2
Tom Bullweed Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 I often shoot a smokeless load out of my scattergun after shooting a whole match of BP loads. I clean out the wad residue if I used plastic wads because I ran out of felt wads.
Gawd Awful Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 I do it all the time. No big deal. Just try to make sure you lube that shotgun with non-protoliem based lube. I do all my lubing with balistol now because I never know what in going to want to shoot
Chicken Scratch Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Sounds to me like a good excuse to buy another Shotgun not that I need an excuse
Blackey Cole Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Only problem will be cleaning it if you let harden up I would clean as soon as possible
Gawd Awful Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Cleaning the shotgun is super simple. Spray windex with Vinegar (make sure it the kind with vinegar) down the barrels and let soak 10-20 mins. Take half of a paper towel and crumple it up. Push it through the barrel and you will get a snake of plastic gunk and powder residue out the other end. Usually one pass gets it all. Spray Balistol on a bore mop and push it through the bores. Done just like that
Buffalo Dick, SASS #12880 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Blackjack Beason shoots both smokeless and bp in his shotgun just about every stage.
Danger Russ Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 Thanks all! I'll pick up some Goex and give it a shot! Pun intended.
I. M. Crossdraw, SASS# 8321 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I shoot BP shells to clean my SG after shooting smokeless. Then I rinse with water.
