Subdeacon Joe
http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20140607/opinion/140609698 PD Editorial: The rising toll of gun violence in America More than 8,000 people have been wounded by gunfire in the United States so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The death toll, to date, is 4,563. The tally from 17,800 instances of gun violence includes 509 children killed or injured, 16 police officers killed, 199 murder-suicide victims and 386 defensive uses of firearms. All told, 29 people have been shot to death each day. Only the most spectacular acts of brutality — think Isla Vista — make news much beyond the community where they occur. And, as the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school 18 months ago demonstrated, the opportunity for meaningful political action is fleeting. Elliot Rodger is just the latest product of a society that values guns over safety. Despite years of mental health issues and treatment, Rodger legally obtained the handguns and ammunition used in a May 23 rampage that left seven dead and 13 injured near the UC Santa Barbara campus. He shot five people, including himself. Please feel free to add your comments. The more the merrier. Link to comment
