Houston CAS Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Guns of August 2013 written in a June 2014 article? Quote
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 (edited) Guns of August 2013 written in a June 2014 article? Write up a major match, then! Even when folks try HARD, publishing an article with lots of photos to be captioned, awards lists to be verified, six months after match is really hard. Nine months - OK by me. I'm just glad we have folks willing to write em! Good luck, GJ (Besides, BDL was referring to the Cavern Cove match from October.) Edited May 28, 2014 by Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Quote
Houston CAS Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 It was just the way it was presented on the first page of the CC in big letters. I was confused at first that it was linked to an old edition because "GUNS OF AUGUST 2013" was emblazoned across the top. Then I saw June 2014 in other places and figured out that it was the correct one. For future time-insensitive articles, it would be better for the headline to focus on the name of the event (SASS Mideast Regional) and not the date. Quote

Deuce Stevens SASS#55996 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Well most know that Guns of August is the mideast regional. Never amazed by what some will find fault with. Wow. Quote
Straight Arrow Hombre Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Actually it's good timing. Folks can read about last years match and still have time to sign up for this year. Quote

This has come up before and I like when the articles are not so far from being able to sign up for a match. If this got my attention 6 months ago I would've forgot by sign up time. Quote
Rancho Roy Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 It appears you do not have to be a member to access the Chronicle. Without logging into this forum I simply click on the link and it opened the Chronicle. I imagine this was intentional to get more folks that might not be members to read The Chronicle and then join? Buck D. Law, SASS #62183 Posted May 29, 2014 Author Posted May 29, 2014 Regarding timing of matches being in the Chronicle: There are a lot of matches across the country and many of them do get reported, so sometimes it takes a while to get every article in. In the days of the printed version, it was limited by the number of pages to be printed. In the current digital version, I would think that it still will be limited somewhat by the fact that every article must be read and edited if only for placement, and that takes someone's time. The Ambush article which was written by Sugah was emailed by mid October. Since that time the Chronicle has been filled with many articles of matches across the country, most of which were held prior to October. It's just life. As has been pointed out, the upside is the articles appear at a good time to remind folks who haven't already planned their shooting calendar that a match is coming up. In case anyone didn't note: Ambush is coming up the first weekend in October. Ya'll come! Now, just in case the editor or someone else at SASS HQ who can affect change is reading, I have a suggestion: Leave the photos (and other images) at a higher resolution. Yes, it would cause the Chronicle to load slower, but it would allow folks to actually be able to see the photos. As they are now, the resolution is so low that it causes photos to be unclear, but things like the applications for matches, if printed, are hardly usable. Talk to your graphic designer. They should know the solution. Quote

Howsomever I've seen a few of you and I'd kinda hope they'd "deresolutionize" those.. You'll also notice that my picture has never graced the pages of the Chronicle so I know their picture selection committee is working too Quote

Misty Moonshine Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Hey all - The Chronicle is typically loaded online (both the pdf AND the digital SOP edition) early- this is NOT NEW. We plan the emailed links/notice to go out on the 1st of each month. If you happen to stumble upon and read it early, that doesnt mean you wont still get the monthly member bulletin letting you know its available... on the 1st of each month. If you have provided your email address to us "numerous times" and you are still not getting our emails- that means YOU opted out of our communications at some point; inadvertently or not...there is no other explanation for you not getting our emails/notices..... trust me, we WANT you to get them!! Please contact us- amber@sassnet.com - Amber will take care of you... there is a special link you have to follow to tell our email system that its ok for us to send you stuff- THEN, I assure you- you'll start getting the notices. Madd Mike #8595 Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Actually it's good timing. Folks can read about last years match and still have time to sign up for this year. I have written for the CC and actually ben printed more than a score times 3 articles for shoots / really about shoots, are saved for just prior to the NEW shoot just incase, it provokes / invites shooters to attend the newtest verzion print the article, just after the shoot, folks just may for-git-about it, before the next (GREAT SHOOT) Quote

Lone Dog, SASS #20401 Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Onlyest emule I ever got was when they were soliciting fer the $35 extry to keep gettin' the paper CC. Not one since and NO I never opted out. Just as well. The online digital mess is unreadable anyway even with me readers on. Plus it refuses to scroll in a timely manner which leaves me twiddling the thumbs far too long. Do not have that trouble with any other web site. Phooey Quote
guitar_slinger Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 (edited) Actually it's good timing. Folks can read about last years match and still have time to sign up for this year. It's called marketing and I believe you're right. Also, it's kind of fun to read about matches I'll never get to attend. I see no problem with it. Only "beef" I have, and it's a small one, is that the PDF file gets loaded to the server and available as a link from the home page several days before the email goes out notifying members it is there. This is a very small item but timing of membership notification could improve. Also, I find the PDF version excellent. One thing while looking at this month's PDF version, many of the things that should be navigation links and external links are not working (continued on next page, various email addresses, links to websites, etc.). It's been a while since I was managing my company's website, but best as I can recall, this is some setting in Illustrator when saving as a PDF or it could be how the HTML code is being written in Illustrator while the articles are being edited. Used to do this for a living in a different life, but it's been about 7 or 8 years and old cowboys forget things. The "interactive" version (at least on my computer) is worse than horrible. Just in case any pards want the PDF link: http://www.sassnet.com/Downloads/14eChron/14julychron.pdf Guitar Slinger Edited July 1, 2014 by guitar_slinger Quote
