Sedalia Dave Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Was in the Academy store in Texarkana Sunday and noticed 5 cans of Pyrodex on the shelf behind the counter along with several boxes of Winchester and CCI primers. Being as I had never seen reloading supplies in Academy before I asked a few questions. Upside is that Academy has decided to begin carrying reloading supplies. Downside is that the stores have NO control over what they will get or when they'll get it. This is new company policy and not all stores have started receiving stock. If you live near one or happen to be passing by one you might get lucky. At least until the word gets out.
Ramblin Gambler Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Is academy still Anti-gun? I stopped using them a while back when the owner (grandson of the founder) became rabidly anti-gun. I heard he finally sold the store, but the jury was still out on whether the new owners were any better.
Lazarus Longshot, SASS #44254 Life Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 Their website shows Tulammo and Winchester primers. I think their quantities are off though; 1000 Tulammo small pistol primers for $2.99 doesn't sound right! I think they mean 100 primers for that price..... RG, I've never heard that Academy is anti-gun. After all, they SELL guns and ammo in the stores. Laz
Hurricane Deck 100366 Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 The one in our neck of the woods isn't anti-gun. I don't know what the corporate policy is, but the guys that man the gun counter at our local store are generally quite helpful and they have a good selection of (non-cas) firearms and factory ammo. This is where we go to stock up on dove shells, skeet, 22lr (when they have it) and have bought a number of guns from them, including a stoeger Longfowler that my wife dove hunts with every year and treasures (Yes, she dove hunts with an OU - she's got talent fellas!)
Col. Nathan C. Riddles, SASS # 7462 Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Is academy still Anti-gun? I stopped using them a while back when the owner (grandson of the founder) became rabidly anti-gun. I heard he finally sold the store, but the jury was still out on whether the new owners were any better. Have had an Academy store here for 6 or 7 years and they've sold guns, ammo and accessories since day one. Even bought a Sig 1911-22 from them about a year ago. Sounds like a bad rumor to me.
Ramblin Gambler Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Selling guns doesn't mean they are not anti-gun. If you recall, after sandy hook, academy was the first big store to stop selling those evil assault weapons. But that's not even what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the owner donating lots of money and doing many fundraisers for anti-gun politicians and causes. Personally, I think the founder's son was just always anti-gun and it ate him up to inherit a business that sold them. The group he sold to isn't donating to the causes like he did, as far as I know, but they do donate almost exclusively to democratic candidates. Probably the only reason they still sell guns is that David, and then the people he sold to, liked money more than they disliked guns. They know most of the stores would close down if they became just a camping and fishing store. As I said before, I swore them off a few years ago because of david gochman's shenanigans with the money he made off of people like me. The current group might not be as bad, but they still don't look too good.
Slowhand Bob, 24229 Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Are we possibly getting Academy mixed up with Dicks? Dicks stripped all of the ARs from the local stores right after the shooting and is actually holding to their 'never' word, still no evil ARs in their racks. Very little reason to go in Dicks anyway, very little ammo and no real deals on anything else. Academy is several hundred miles away but I always enjoy visiting them, well stocked and the people behind the counter seem like friendly gun talking fokes to me!
Sedalia Dave Posted May 20, 2014 Author Posted May 20, 2014 Haven't been in a Dick's store in a while but Academy had a very large selection of AR style rifles.
Ramblin Gambler Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Don't remember seeing any Dicks' around here, so I don't pay attention to them. I think I see some in Louisiana, but I've never been tempted to go in. Now if I ever am tempted, I think I'll be able to resist.
Four-Eyed Buck,SASS #14795 Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 We have a Dick's around here. I don't go in there unless I'm forced to
Jackaroo, # 29989 Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Picked up 2 cases of remingtom STS Light Target & low recoil shotgun ammo at the Academy store in Fort Smith yesterday. $7.99 a box??? But AR's tax is 9.75%
Elk Creek LeMieux Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 There's a Dicks and an Academy in the "big town" up the highway here... Academy had at least a dozen "AR" type rifles the other day, bunch of accessories for them too. "Tactical" shotguns and pistols, hunting rifles, revolvers... More ammo than anyone else in town, some steel target stuff for small and large calibers, etc... I was really impressed. On the same day (trying to find the perfect running shoe for my wife) Dicks had... Well... The name fits. Not a single semi auto even.
