Poet Jones 99980 Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 I'm noticing the drooping sleeve in the way syndrome lately and seeking advice. Cuffs or garters? I shoot Traditional/Crossdraw, if that makes a difference. What do y'all prefer and why? Also, if cuffs, roping(long) vs short(gun hand) style.?
Fillmore Coffins, SASS #7884 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Garters will help keep your sleeves from slipping down, cuffs will keep your sleeves in check at the working end of your arms. Wear both for Classic Cowboy. Fillmore
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Garters interfere in no way; cuffs hold in a lot of heat and can slow your hands down until you get used to the added weight. Garters are cheap. If you are just holding up long sleeves, go garters. As FC says, no reason you can't wear both in Classic Cowboy - I do. And my sleeves are almost always too short to begin with. (35 inch sleeve length - hard to find Tall sizes in most cowboy shirts). Good luck, GJ
Foothills Drifter Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Howdy...... I don't wear garters....the saloon girls do..... Vern / Foothills Drifter...
Chickasaw Bill SASS #70001 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 got the Garders I wear , by removing em from the saloon girls , legs CB
Bull Skinner Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I have and wear both, but Garrison Joe's got it right. If only one choice go with garters, do the job cheaply and with less interference.
Col. Nathan C. Riddles, SASS # 7462 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Garters are meant to hold your sleeves up. In the 19th & first few years of the 20th centuries all shirt sleeves were about 37" & men with shorter arms wore garters to keep them up. Cuffs were worn by working cowboys & wranglers to protect their shirt sleeves from the ropes and their wrists & fore arms from rope burns. Shirt sleeves of different lengths were invented around 1917 & short sleeve shirts came about in the twenties.
Wyatt Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 In Florida Summer = Garters Winter = Cuffs S Florida = Rolled up sleeves all the time
Lead Ringer Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I'm a garter man, have about a dozen colors. Have always admired the leather cuffs! just never tried them. Regards, Ringer
Branchwater Jack SASS #88854 Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Like Ringer said, you can alway color coordinate your garters to your outfits. Me, I like to make sure they clash! Love my garters, although I have been looking at cuff options lately....
Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I wear both. The cuffs are usually too hot in the summer.
Buckhorn Bud Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I wear what seems appropriate for the outfit I'm wearing. For instance, when it's cool enough for a leather or flannel shirt I often wear cuffs (as seen in my avitar) to keep the heavy sleeves out of my way. As stated earlier cuffs are a bit warm for hotter weather so I wear garters with the cooler summer outfits. Also if I wear a vest I'll often wear garters to match. Living in the Mojave Desert my cuffs don't see much use.
Cheatin' Chamberlin Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 I wear both. If you go with cuffs make sure you try them on first. If they dont fit correctly they will get in your way. I tried many different types. The ones that I wear all the time are made of very thin leather. Very flexible with snaps on the end. I had a very nice stamped leather set. But they were just to stiff. Even after wearing them for some time. They just got in the way. That is never the case with the thin leather set. They are a little warm in the summer here in the south. But you get use to them. Cheatin'
Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 +1 on rolled up sleeves in the South in summer. When temp hits mid 90s with humidity to match cuffs are just too warm cr
Poet Jones 99980 Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 What about the fancy leather garters you see once in a while? I guess they tie on. Some I have seen have a strip of elastic in the back.
