Jeff Quinn's review of the Winchester 1873 Model

Thanks for posting the review. I need a rifle and this one is on my radar.

I read one review stating that the rifle did not cycle properly with .38 Special ammo. Looks like Jeff's rifle ran fine with the shorter cases.

Still not seen one in the flesh around here.

I dunno. Not trying to be a "snob" about Jeff Quinn's review, but from my stand point I would tend to put a lot more credence into a review from Long Hunter or anybody else who spends every weekend with a 73 rifle in his/her hands. Maybe it's just me.

Dude doesn't really do reviews but instead it's more of a presentation. I'm subscribed to his channel and watch all his vids. I mean, dude has a Schofield top break cut for moon clips which is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

I have one and it operates with .38 special ammo quiet well. I use the same ammo that I was using in my Marlin Cowboy Comp and Uberti 73. Short strokes are available but I haven't really felt that It would be of great benefit to me. The factory stock gun stroke is somewhere between the super short stroked Ubertis and a stock Uberti. The only thing I have done is add a little more to the front site and reduce the spring tension on the lever safety stop.

This is on my short list to replace my Rossi I got when I first started. I'm still leaning a little towards the Henry tho, since these Winchester are now made outside the US...

I guess one can't post a positive review of a CAS viable gun from a respected firearm enthusiast if it ain't from a SASS shooter, eh?

I had a short stroke & new aluminum carrier installed by Poineer Gun Works on my Winchester (if you short stroke with PGW they said the stock carrier will not work ) and as long as the 38 special is 1.44 - 1.55 long it works just fine. Shorter 38 special cartridges should work fine on a stock Winchester, but with the short stroke & carrier that was installed I have to use longer ones.

+1 While I do appreciate this review, I would like to see one from someone who really knows how to run one hard.

BTW Dan, I saw the version of Light 'Em Up with a softer song and it's quite good also. Those videos are IMHO the best way to reach younger, new shooters!

Have had mine since last july. Not really shooting anything else since I started sass shooting last july cannot compare to others. I like it a lot. Tried pgw short stroke and changed spring tension etc but never really seemed to change it from stock. Duece Stevens, who is a great guy, spent some time visiting with me at winter range and suggested sending to cody. Just got back yesterday an will shoot this weekend. Feels absolutely fantastic dry cycling it. That being said, not being a fast shooter, someone like Duece or you other guys could run this like the wind out of the box. As far as being made in japan, built very well. It says Winchester and I like it. That is my two cents worth. Maybe more like two pesos worth. :)

Several years ago Larsen E. Pettifogger published one of his great do-it-yourself photo essays on modifying the '73s carrier to work with shorter cartridges. I did that with PGWs aluminum carrier and I can use 125 grain TC .38 Specials that measure less than 1.40" OAL. I did a search for his essay but could not find it. Maybe someone can post a link.

Basically you remove metal from the slanted face of the carrier so that the rim of the next cartridge coming out of the magazine tube is above the inclined plane. Dremel, file, and patience.

I like to see good firearm reviews from reputable people it doesn't matter what shooting walk of life they come from. Jeff is an authority in the firearms industry. He reaches out to many more people than you might think and the fact that he did a review on this and said good things about cowboy action shooting should not be diminished... But rather supported.

I have had my Winchester since January, am shooting in a match this week-end. I wish it were made here as well as some other cowpokes but it is not and you have to decide if you want Winchester's remake or someone elses of their gun. The quality is great all fits well and has a very smooth stroke right out of the box. I have not had mine short stroked because it is not a long stroke to begin with and I am new to SASS and not that fast so it works for me for now. The safety lever spring can be a place for frustration, it has caused me some. But I did put in some ammo at 1.40 OAL just to cycle it through a few times and jammed it up. The factory stuff comes in at 1.52 OAL and that is quite a bit of difference when you stand both next to each other. It is a very nice gun. But I have one and now its on to a '66 for back up.

I agree and I think I worded my comment in a way that was meant specifically not to diminish it. :) Any exposure by someone like him is a good thing. However, what I really would like to see (since I'm interested in buying one) is a review of the .44-40 shooting black powder by someone who can really give it a workout. Dreaming, I know... :)

That is going to be my next rifle purchase. I'll give it to Deuce Stevens and video him 'giving it a good workout' - he is definitely a SASS authority.

here he is with the .357/38 version...

I do wish American workers had been used to make them, but as far as the name, today's Winchester is not the original, so I don't see how the name matters all that much. I hope you enjoy yours - let us know how she works under pressure! :)

I knew what you meant Dan. Of course everyone is a sass expert now days. It's funny how you almost never hear a bad review on a cowboy gun.

BTW that Miroku Deuce is shooting in that video is not out of the box.

Yup - it says in the video comment " Action work by Colt McAllistor, stock stroke length" ;)

Wow, folks. All I was saying is that if I really wanted to seek out a good review, on say an AR-15, I would have a tendency to listen to Kyle Lamb over someone who reviews everything from .22's to the kitchen sink. Same here. There are really good General Practitioners and then there are specialists. I support them all.

Of course there specialist who hold more weight when reviewing a particular platform, but Quinn knows his stuff enough to support a general review and the audience he reaches is huge. I personally like to see big names in the industry give positive reviews on cowboy guns. Helps to support the game and spread the word. I say good on him and this review.

Great sound track!

Jeff is a class act, and a real gentlemen. He is not a CAS shooter, but he is a respected and knowledgeable gun reviewer, and there is a lot of good information in this video about the new Winchester 1873. I have been shooting one for a while, and it is a finely made rifle which can be had at the same cost as an Uberti - sometimes less! The build quality is what we have come to expect of Miroku . Short stoked, out of the box, and drilled and tap for a tang site. The all blue finish, round barrel and straight grain walnut are straight out of Winchester's period specs for the standard 1873. It is a very nice rifle, IMHO.

Thanks for posting the video, GG. :)

The "Dude" does some good general reviews and is well connected. Also appreciated the positive press for CAS.

I watch Jeff Quinn's reviews and enjoy them. However, for our sport, ususally a good review by one or more of our top competitors would be more valuable.

I'm still waiting for a top shooter review of the 1860 Henry in 44-40. Been holding back from getting a Uberti 1866 in 44-40, depending on how the Henry shapes up - I'd far prefer the American made gun (I already have 4 Uberti's in other calibers).

Thanks pard....I'm a fan of Miroku - had one of the 1895 Model's in 30-06 - one of the coolest and beautiful fit and finish. Miss it dearly.

GG, I'm also a fan of Miroku! Have two of their rifles and 4 shotguns (BSS for CAS, BT-99 & Citori Trap, & Charles Daly Skeet).

Love them all, but need a '66 or '60 in 44-40. I was fortunate to obtain a Uberti Iron Henry in 45Colt - love it, but not for BP. Want 44-40 for that.

I'd sure like to hear from someone who's shot the American made Henry (44-40). I'd pay the premium if it is as good as it looks!

I need an excuse for another gun safe............. :P;)
