SCAM ALERT!

I've gotten one of these calls before and just got another. So I figured I give out another warning about it.

If anyone calls claiming to be Windows Tech Support, and saying that your computer is sending out viruses. HANG UP! What they do is get you to go to a website and download software to fix the "problem", once you do they have free access to your computer and will go after your personal data.

A good demonstration of what happens is here.

Be careful out there. The web is wilder than the west ever was.

Got one last month. Guy had a thick Indian accent. And I don't mean Navajo.

I wonder how many fall for it?

I get them every now and then. The minute I hear that "Sub-continent" accent, I tell them my computer is fine, and hang up! Shame we can't trace back those calls and zap them with a theta ray or something. "Shields up, Mr. Sulu!"

When they say they are from Microsoft® I either tell them I use nothing but Mac (not true) or ask for their Microsoft® ID number or employee number. That usually gets them. I also threaten to report them as I know this call is SPAM in addition to which we are on the no call list. By then they're usually hung up.
