Gun Sales Plunging?

Background checks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, considered to be the most accurate means of tracking gun sales, plunged by a third in January compared to the year before. There were about 1.66 million background checks last month, and nearly 2.5 million in January the year before.

One and two-thirds million is still quite a few. At work we are going gang busters on parts for the Smith & Wesson M&P line. Also sights for some Rugers, and triggers for Mossbergs.

Plunging where? You'd never know it, judging from the last few gun shows I've been to here in Va.

Yeah, and how much down from 2 and 3 years ago? Comparing one year to only one other isn't very good statistics. Not much of a graph, more of a line.

Last summer I stopped in at the big gunshop for the first time in years. The back wall has a rifle and shotgun rack the full length except for a single door. I was shocked to see it less than half full. The inventory has slowly built up and now it's nearly full. I don't know if they are not sailing as much or getting more in stock.

Tax refund? Maybe people are more worried about paying taxes? And outrageous health insurance costs!

Always always always be a seller during any buying frenzy. No matter what they do end eventually.

When Gun sales were going up the industry gleefully quoted this statistic and no one was 'waiting for tax refunds'.

I was in Cabelas & o'heard a trade going on "I paid $2300 for this AR!"

"Sorry- We allow $500 for trade". He was disappointed but went ahead on the trade for a turkey gun. Said his wife told him that he should have thought of it when he bought 6 AR's.

Gun dealers have been complaining about the availability of guns ever since the ammo shortage. This is no surprise. A gun shop owner just told me yesterday that ammo AND guns are starting to surface.

I'm thinking that all that has happened is that more people are waiting to be able to buy with cash rather than plastic. With so many under-employed and scraping by paycheck to paycheck, buying guns is a low priority.

Local small gunshop guy said guys were buying AR15s on their credit cards with the plans to double their investment before the payment came due. One guy had 5 and didn't get any sold. That's got to hurt.

I sold 6... highest I paid for any was $600. Best I got was a Colt at $2400 on fair auction. Unless there is a door to door search and seizure coming we may have just witnessed the high watermark for gun prices in the near term.

We have two shops within 20 miles that specialise in tactical firearms and related stuff. Every other shop has them including our local Walmart. About 50 miles away is Black Rifle super store. I'd think the market is saturated in our area.

Warden, you shoulda been to the Eastern Sports Show in H'burg PA (now Great American Sports Show) in Feb. Every single vendor in the now bigger than ever gun hall had a AR offering or 10...or 20...complete with all new accessories for AR's.

People are now describing the AR platform as "Barbie doll for men" with some even predicting an end to the old bolt action platform for hunting rifles. I must admit that I shot a AR in 260 that put 3 in quarter at 200.....awesome. And arguably enough (308 or 260) for anything that craps in North America.

Another high profile multiple murder during a rabidly anti-gun, liberal administration where the shooter uses an AR will trigger the same response. Prices will spike again, sales will soar, inventories will dry up and it will be deja vu.

I went to the big Tulsa gunshow and granted my observations were based on Sunday only. People are looking for specific reloading components and bargains on .22 ammo. I didn't see but one person carrying out a bunch of 223 ammo.

Compared to past shows I observed fewer people buying guns off tables and especially fewer folks walking around with guns to sell than I've ever seen in 20 years of going to that show. Those that were invariably carried a black rifle for sale.

Please don't tell anyone I wrote this... Maybe everyone is getting their guns from that pillar of the gun control group, Leland Yee. :o;)

Just a joke...NOT a funny one though.

Not very funny.....I thought I read that he was selling full auto.

+1

I went to a gun show a couple of weeks ago. All the folks that were buying up the ammo from the big chains then trying to re-sell it at the show for a premium were disappointed. Unless it was a difficult to come by caliber, it wasn't moving.

I have a sporterized 03 Springfield that looks like it could of been owned by Jack O'Connor. The bore is dark. Probably shoots about a 4" group at 100 yards. I've killed a lot of deer with it. I did shoot one twice. I shot a forkhorn that turned and stated running so I shot again. Turned out the second shot wasn't required. First shot through the lungs from left to right, second shot through the lungs from right to left. No Barbie Doll guns for me.

Wait till after the tax refunds come in. ^_^

LG

We already got ours, and put it in the vacation fund. But I've got a list of stuff to photograph and sell on ebay to generate some fresh cash for my gun fund.

Hello,

Not true. If you can withhold just enough to not have a penalty with your return, you can make more money by keeping that money in your bank/investments & out of the government's hands longer. Tax Refunds are not the optimal scenario.

Score one for the young lady from "Near Sacramento".

All things being considered, I don't think I would be very anxious to admit I was from Sacramento.

What doesn't kill ya, makes ya stronger. :)

I walked to work in downtown Sacramento, in an area that David Roberti drove through & used that as cause for a CCP. I was only scared once, when a homeless person jumped out of the bushes, :o from where he'd been sleeping. I think he was as afraid as I was.
