How fast are you with your Rossi?

My wife shoots a Rossi, and I really like it. I did the Steve Gunz action job on it a year ago for her and she just loves it. Reliable, dependable gun...never had a FTF, only problem she has ever had is if she did not lever it all the way and did not eject the spent case, but other than that been flawless. Well I was thinking of getting myself one for a back up gun, and heard all the grumblings about how slow they are and was just curious how fast folks are that shoot 92's all the time are with them? Gimme some input, times, etc! Now if you shoot a '73, '66, or a Marlin and just want to dog the Rossi, please move on lol.

Thanks,

BD

I have the same issue with levering a Rossi. Try your wife's Rossi for awhile before buying one as a backup. I use mine now for long range work and love it for that application.

I have a 92 and love it.I would never sell it.I shoot a 73 faster than I do my 92 but the 73 is short stroked. If a fast shooter shoot a 92 it will be fast but that same fast shooter will be faster with a 73 or 66 or marlin.I shoot with a cowboy that can shoot my 92 faster than I can shoot my 73.The 92 is not as fast but I love mine.Oh I also deer and hog hunt with my 92.

I only have a 73 rifle but really want a 92 just because. They are great rifles too for different reasons. Competition is great and definitely a part of why I shoot CAS but there is far more to this game than simply being the fastest or winning a plaque......the cool old guns are probably the biggest part that draws me to the game versus any given black gun competition. I would love to own one or sometimes two of many different CAS guns that I can actually go shoot or compete with on a whim. So go buy and enjoy whatever your or your wife's heart desires. Nobody ever said you could only have one rifle or one type of rifle. ;)

I like mine - slicked up by Nate Kiowa Jones - minimal recoil - about like shooting a .22 rifle. Accurate.

I'm not the fastest gun in the West - but - I sure like mine.

If I'm slow - it's because I'm slow - not the gun.

Just my 2 cents.

My first rifle was a .45 cal Rossi '92, then bought a '73 from Cody Conagher, but kept the Rossi as a back-up. I also did the Nate action job. After shooting the '73 for awhile, I tried the '92 at a couple of matches just for grins. Having gotten accustomed to the shorter lever throw of the '73, I found the '92 longer throw frustrating.

The '92 is a great rifle and can be run fast. For me, I'd rather have another toggle link for a back up.

Great guns. I shoot a fully action jobbed Rossi, a 66 & a 73. Not as fast as a super short stroked 66 or 73 in the hands of a top gun, but just avoid misses and it will be fast enough... (at least as far as I am concerned!)

I picked one up in .357 Mag. I have not shot it in a match yet. It seems to cycle like my Win 94. Next match is April 1, I'll give her a spin then.

Here is my brother, Dirty Grits, at his second ever match, shooting my .45 colt Rossi 92. He has since acquired a SS one in 357. Neither of us has out run them yet. That being said, I am waiting on Miroku to offer a '73 with a 24" barrel in 45Colt.

Get the video, ejector spring, and mag follower from Nate Kiowa Jones at http://www.stevesgunz.com/

Do his modifications, especially to the ejector spring and the LH cartridge guide. Shooting before and after I did the modifications is like having a different gun. If you don't want to cut tthe hammer spring or file down the trigger spring you can get a kit from Brownells that has those springs in it. The kit also comes with an ejector spring but the one from Nate is vastly superior.

Love my 92 in 357. did all of Nate Kiowa Jone's recomended mods and no the action is nice and smooth. I have no problems cycling 38s as long as I keep the OAL over 1.450" Haven't shot a 73 or 66 so I have no comparrison for speed but I'm not in this to be the fastest gun anyway.

Remember; if you shoot slower the fun lasts longer.

Now that I'm thinking about it, my Rossi doesn't seem to like the .357 Magnum JSPs I tried feeding her the other day. She runs .38 Special LRNs just fine, though. I believe I will try the kit you mentioned on my 92, after I get my 1860 short stroked and smoothed out.

Buckshot,

My average stage times were around 26 to 28 seconds when I retired my 92 for a 73. I probably could have knocked a little more off if I could have loaded my ammo longer, but my 92 was a 16" carbine so I was locked into an OAL of 1.44" in order to fit 10 rounds in the mag. With the shorter ammo I was running on the ragged edge. If I levered any faster it would stove pipe and ruin a good run.

The gun was very slick and smooth and up to that point was very serviceable for CAS chores.

I kept the 92 for a backup until a year and a half ago when I dug it out of the locker for some practice. Like Deadwood Slim I was no longer in time with the gun and would have great difficulty running it at match speed now.

I picked up another 73 to pull double duty as my wife's match gun and my back up, so the 92 is looking for a new home if you are interested.

Hope this helps,

Smoke

Buckshot, I had a great time shooting with you and your wife at Hell on the Border. I mostly shoot a Marlin but I have a stainless Rossi 92 in 44-40 for when I want to shoot in Frontier Cartridge. I tore it down and smoothed everything up and it's a great rifle now and very accurate. There is a learning curve going from the shorter lever throw of a Marlin to the '92 but once you do they run real well.

Man Doc! just the kind of info I was hoping for, as well as many other replies from you other kind folks. Me and Dixie had a great time shooting with you too! I think I may have the gremlins run out of my Marlin again, but I want a backup for days it acts up like it did at HOTB. I'm probably going to get my Rossi in 44 Mag, since my Marlin is 44 mag. 44-40 would be awesome if they still made it in that caliber, I might just convert if they did  lol.

Have 2 of the rossi 92s a Rifle and a Carbine. NKJ has worked over both of them. Being rather like molasses in Montana in January, I will probably never out run them. You do have to fully open the lever, I find that a little more of a challenge with the rifle than the carbine. The extra 1/2 inch of stock makes a difference for me. If I am not careful I close the action on an empty chamber with the rifle. The elevator lifts the next cartridge at the very end of the lever stroke. Other than that they work great, seriously if good enough for John Wayne they aught to be good enough for us.

When during the cycle does you 92 have issues with the 357s? If you can, try ammo with a different OAL and see if the problem goes away. Some 92s have an issue where if the OAL is too long the bullet hits the top of the chamber and the case hits the bottom of the chamber entrance and gets wedged there because the rim has not come up far enough.

I have heard of some folks taking a couple of thousandths from the bottom of the chamber edge to assist with this binding but that could be dangerous as this is also the area where the cartridge experiences the most stress.

That rifle also had issues feeding 38s. When I took it apart found that someone had been grinding on the cartridge guides and they were beyond repair. Rifle is back at Rossi to have this fixed. Bought it as a newly factory reconditioned but I find it hard to beleive that it left the factory with that much amaturish gunsmithing done to it.

I shot a stock 92 in 45LC for my 1st 2 years. As I got faster, but not real fast, it started stove piping. When it started stove piping during a big match, I bought a 66 from one of the vendors and used it to finish the match. I now have a Marlin, two 73s and the 66. The 73s and the 66 are short stroked by Cody.

I would still be using the 92 if it had not started stove piping.

So nobody is shooting a fast 92? I was hoping to see some vids. I personally have never seen anyone shoot a 92 fast. They just aren't common in my neck of the woods. Lucky if I see one or at most two at a monthly match usually there aren't any.

I am Not fast by any stretch of the Imagination.

But I do shoot a 92 at every match that I get to shoot.

If I could get as fast with my shotgun as I am with my 92.

I could improve my time alot.

Problem is Im so damned busy with work I cant shoot as much as I would like .

But That is a blessing I am not complaining about. :)

good post Deuce.

Just HOW FAST do some of you fellers want a 92 to run?

Question: are you wanting the 92 to run fast, or are you wishing you could run the 92 fast?

I kinda went away from my 92 when my wife stole it from me. I was only able to get two stages under 20 sec with it. I'm not really the best rifle toggler anyway. Went to a.cowboy comp Marlin slicked up by slick. Helped a lot!

When the cartridge tries to enter the chamber, the top front of the bullet jams into the top of the edge of the barrel, and only when I don't have the rifle perfectly vertical. No problems with the .38s, just those .357s. 1.550" OAL on the .38s. Brand new rifle, too.

I'm every bit as fast with my Rossi as I am with my '60 Uberti Henry. Maybe just a tad bit faster as I don't have to worry about the Henry Hop. Please understand that my definition of fast is not necessarily your definition of fast. If I splurged for a short stroke '73, I'd probably be just as fast with it!

you guys that shoot the 44 Rossi, what OAL do you usually go with by the way? special or mag brass or both?

I shoot 200gr RNFP .

I load my 44 mag to the crimp grove .

I load my 44 specials to the first lube grove .

This makes the special just about as long as a mag .

But it will still fit in my 44 special Pistols .

Works great .

This advise was given to me by Nate Kiowa Jones the 92 specialist.

And I have never had a issue running ether load.

Hope this helps.

I've been told I shoot mine pretty fast. Have a pic taken at last years Land Run with two empty cases in the air at once(been told that's respectable speed). Did the action work myself and I'll put it up against ANY Marlin for smoothness and speed. Won't un with a '73 but then neither can I lol.

I think the speed record by Deuce was set with a Marlin
