John Boy
A US Patent No 63690 was granted on April 9 1867 for a combination rifle front sight ... In all the firearm's catalogs up to 1890, the correct name of the sight was used. The patent expired in 1890 and Lyman jumped on the manufacture of the sight like a dog on a pork chop. Lyman called their sight the Lyman #5 and never once used the inventor's name who created it. Subsequently into current times, the combination front sight has been misnamed as a BEECH Combination Sight by every replica manufacturer.in the US except ONE! So, we started a thread on the ASSRA forum to identify the correct spelling of the sight and give proper credit to the inventor ... Is it a BEECH Combination Sight or is it a BEACH Combination sight? The full details have been recorded on this link, including a jpg of the patent drawing and the complete history of the sight including the inventor's full name ... http://www.assra.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1390527313/0 Enjoy! Four-Eyed Buck,SASS #14795
Good question,JB. I've got a combo sight on my 1889. Wonder if it's the above mentioned or a Lyman? Mine's missing a bead on the top of the loop, though
