Smokey Shayne
I have used CitriStrip on a few guns. It has always worked well for me

Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life
I refinished a Weatherby MK V with their plastic finish, tough job. If you have problems softening the finish so you can scrape it off...use a heat gun. It really helps.
J-BAR #18287
Citrus Strip and use a wooden paint stirrer as a scraper. It's work, be patient.
Hacker, SASS #55963
After the citrus strip use the stop for the citrus strip should be on the bottle. I think it mineral spirits. It stops the working part of the stripper. Otherwise the stripper could continue to work.

Three Gun Cole
M.E.K. From sherwin-Williams should cut the finish without wrecking the wood. Don't use on plastic. Methol Ethel Ketone
Hacker, SASS #55963
Do wear gloves and use safety glasses. Wearing old expendable clothes might be useful also. By all means read the label on the stripper so you know what to use to stop it. And cleanup.
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) is a really nasty solvent - it gives me severe muscle pain. If you use this, really make sure you are ventilating well and avoiding the fumes. Good luck, GJ
Tom Bullweed
I work in a metal shop. MEK is the most toxic chemical compound that we use. +1 on the Citrus strip. Try not to oversoak the wood since anything that the wood absorbs will have to dry before refinishing. When the wood soaks any of these strippers, it will swell. Don't be tempted to sand the wood down while it is swollen.
