Age Based categories

I had a birthday and looked to move up to a better category only to find that SASS does not recognize any categories over Elder Statesman.

I thought there was a Land Baron and then a Patron?

Perhaps you and I need a Geezer Frontiersman category...

Hey, when you shoot regularly with Split Rail, you invent geezer frontiersman categories, just so you can get a blue ribbon now and then. :D

Ohio Cheatin' Charlie & me figure that Senior Frontiersman & Silver Senior Frontiersman categories are in order! :P

Yeah but I'm wanting the Land Baron Frontiersman.

J-Bar, I thought that "Geezer" was a personality description rather than a category.

I know Cheatin Charlie. He's not that good. I beat him at poker at Possum Trot.

Personally, I'm holding out for Greying Buckskin Curmudgeon

There is "cattle baron".......75 years and older.

Not in the new SASS handbook

Hey Mike:

Hope yer staying warm up Michigan way.

If the shoe fits...both of us, prolly.

The more advanced/experienced "age based" categories have been relegated to the same status as FCGF, Senior GF, and many others...

i.e. not enough support from the clubs (as represented by their Territorial Governors) to get them "officially recognized".

There are basically two camps in opposition to their recognition:

Those who habitually give the issues the "kiss of death" by pointing out that any match at any level of competition may offer whatever additional categories they wish...

and those who are adamant regarding NO NEW CATEGORIES!

That pretty well covers the spectrum.

I am amazed you were sober enough to remember!

I'm for doing away with all current categories and

assign categories on

height or

weight

I'm thinkin' if categories were actually for your shootin' ability, I'd end up in the "Side of Barn " category. ! Or, if the category were for your speed, I'd be in the "Asprin" category, ie 'slow movin' dope'

I think fondly about that match often. One posse with 9 Frontiersmen, #1 in the world and 3 morre in the top 10 in the world. Only one smokeless shooter on the posse and that was Buck D Law. Gallons of Copperhead Juice, keg of beer on the porch and piles of excellent food. I still dream of the fish fry.

Poker at night and then "Milkbone".

Of all the posse photos I have purchased, that is the only one on our wall. It's enclosed in the picture frame Miss Lorrie got for SOG.

Good times!

No matter where my birthday throws me, I'll be shooting Frontiersman for the forseeable future.

OK, guess I was wrong, I was led to believe that cattle baron became an official catagory after 2013 EOT. Learn something every day......

Needless to say the older we get the more aware we become of the need for categories that are more representative of our age group. We have a age based representative system in the Smokeless categories, but even that could use some adjustment. However, the Black Powder categories have no such accommodations. I've been shooting FC for a long time and am well into the Silver Senior age group. It's reached the point that I am shooting against guys who are somewhere between my grandkids and kids ages. I of course do the best that I can, but it's getting more and more difficult to bare the expense to attend the large matches that do not offer the consideration of a Age Based FC category. If there are enough shooters to provide a viable Age based category, then they should be offered. For years, I've heard the same old broken record "The MD can add any category that he/she wants"....bbummmped, "The MD can add any category that he/she wants"...bbummmped, etc, etc, etc. Well, until the system makes those categories "OFFICIAL", it ain't-a-gonna-happen! AND, they will not become "Official" unless enough pressure is applied. The most likely place that pressure can come from is the Older group of shooters. The problem does not affect the younger shooters, so it will never be a priority with them.... at least not for years to come, and by then it will be too late for most of us, and they will face the same issue.

Ifn' ya wanna win that category BK darlin'...they's gonna hafta take out the words "handsome" and "charm"..... :P:P :P

Well BK pard.... I hear ya, If that category you mention had a really large line of shooters wanting it, then it ought to be considered. I'm not lamented as much as you let on, I've been on top a few times and I haven't rolled over yet, but that don't mean I wouldn't relish a race against my peers.

Categories should be determined by things like shooting style, powder, gun restrictions etc. once the categories are set it is possible to provide an age based division that is flexible depending on match size and such.

I refer you to the sample system near the bottom of this page.

I agree, Prof. Bullspit's Matrix is the way to go. Main categories by shooting style and propellant, along with the Jr., costumes etc. = 20 baseline categories to be subdidvided depending on the match and number of shooters. Good job Prof. :)

Around here we use Range Boss because Cattle Baron and Cowboy would have the same abbreviation

When all y'all rocket surgeons are ready to take the badazzes out of every single category then give them an open category to compete in for some hi end prizes, money, fortune, fame, sponors, etc.

Every single other sport on this planet has both an amateur and/ or a open/pro division. Hey, it works and it would totally do away with this SASS Ball mentality.

The Professor's matrix is the only road out of this dilapidated, outdated, rube-Goldberg, crisis designed, patchworked monstrosity. The Age Based system made it even worse than it was before.

HELLO WILD BUNCH!!!!! Quit looking at my Wrangler BUTT and get to work on a single rule book and a category/class/ open system that doesn't run our successful young shooters off into lessor shooting disciplines. Let's throw this bum out and start over. From IDPA to IPSC to NSCA at least the rule books don't require 4 links and the passcode to the secret bunker.

If you're not willing to blow up the model every generation you'll end up like Scientific Research (slide rule) and KODAK (who thought digital wasn't commercial as film or XEROX (what do you mean 'don't print it'?)

Some shoots will drop SASS recognized classes if there are not enough shooters for that class (usually 3)and some shoots will recognize non SASS classes if there are enough shooters so I don't see the point of petitioning SASS for any more "official" classes .

I like the Professors plan

How does a shoot "get enough shooters" for an 'unofficial category' if it's not even offered on the match application in the first place because it's not "officially recognized"??
