Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217
Hi Friends, The Moderators have been bashed for not censuring people, posts, and threads. Then, we get bashed for too much censuring. This is not black and white, there is much grey (judgment) involved. We are trying to ensure that the SASS Wire Guidelines are followed. It is helpful to receive a report via the Report button on posts or PMs, as all Moderators have access to the Report Center. Sometimes we are away at events and will not see a message for a long while. This is not good if it is really bad, like Spam Porn, naughty language... My opinion is that if a post reflects negatively on the people in our sport, our rules, the owners...it is best unsaid. You can disagree with the people, rules, and owners if you do it politely. I believe that all of you want our sport to grow. A pleasant, friendly disagreement is a better way of ensuring that growth than a rude, antagonistic argument. We never know who may be reading the Wire and it is important to be as nice here as you are at a match. Regards, Allie Mo PS Thank you PB for starting this thread. Litl Red
The written word is about the worst way humans communicate??? Absolutely.... There is no tone or inflection to provide clues. How often here do you see people say, "I WAS JOKING"! How often do we see responses to posts that are responding to something read between the lines that wasn't between the lines. There was a recent thread where one side went ballistic about something that wasn't even suggested by the OP. When the message is really important, what happens? At least one side hires lawyers to write it all out...... lol.............

Widder, SASS #59054
Widder, My suggestion wasn't directed at you, but it sounds like you took it that way. Sorry. The written word is about the worst way humans communicate. Heck, I even typed so fast I called Allie, Annie. I used your quote to illustrate my post, however. You say you've been looking at a thread that should have been closed days ago. That's a perfect example of what happens on most forums. Chances are really good that the mod(s) has missed the post that screwed that thread. If there are only one or two mods, there won't be eyes on every thread all day long, it's not possible. But if all of us report things that are starting to come loose, there is a good possibility the mess will be easier to stop or to clean up. Forums almost always have software that raises flags to mods when posts are reported. I'm a mod on a forum that has almost 1K members logged in right now. (There are usually 3X that number of guests logged in too.) Whenever any post is reported on the 6 sub-forums of mine, I get an email if I'm not logged in. More importantly, the "paid employees" also are notified. If I'm logged in, I also get "notified" too. Mods can't be every where every minute. It's really worthwhile for members who see trouble to help out and report it. It keeps things going along a mannerly path and makes favorite forums "family rooms" more than kindergarten playgrounds. Litl Red, actually, I agreed with your post and meant to say so in my intro sentence. My bad! The rest of the thread was also intended to show my actions in the past that support your comment.....or atleast that was my intentions. Yes, the written words are sometimes hard to express some of our thoughts here on the Wire. Have a good day. ..........Widder

Seldom Seen #16162
I think it would be nice if you removed that reference from your "Location." Well I was called this on the wire and the mods at the time allowed the name calling to remain on the thread along with more bitter, offensive names I have been called over the years. A word search on your part will identify the name caller and the fact the mods allowed the post to remain on the wire.

Would you provide a better clue or send the Moderators a Report or me a PM? If I see anyone calling another that name or any distasteful name, I will not leave it online to reflect negatively against participants in our sport. Litl Red
You know, awhile back my wife was looking over my shoulder and noticed what another member had said to me, "maybe you should be made ta wear a flag. Call it a Bitcher flag. That way tha rest of us could mark you from a distance an have a better day as a result." Her take was that idea was exactly what the NAZI's did to the Jews. Well sorta, the Jews had to wear a yellow star. Then she asked me why I would want to hang out with people like that. She had a good point. The forums show the world what CAS people are like. Litl Red
Lil Red. Maybe she should ask. Why do you complain so much that they would say that about you? Now THAT is the question she should ask. Anvil, it's interesting that you assume I was complaining. Simply accusing someone of something doesn't make it so, except maybe on the internet. But ignoring that, you do realize that almost every post in a discussion could be considered "complaining", no matter how it's side is presented. And complaining about an issue is perfectly acceptable. This thread here was started about what happens when the complaining is by one mameber about another. Interestingly, in the thread I was told to wear a "G" so everyone would know to shun me, the thread wasn't complaining by the 3 members on the OP side. All 3 simply suggested something they thought might attract more shooters. A couple of members tried to bring the thread back to the topic, and tried to clarify it wasn't against anything. Unfortunately, it's a very popular tactic in internet forums to shift your argument onto the individuals on the other side. "Whiner" is what we usually see however. Is it actually ok to be impolite to someone you think has posted something you don't like, or too many times?
Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217
Hi Folks, I believe it is not acceptable to be impolite. I confess to not having always been polite in the past. I try much harder now that I am a Moderator and wish you'd all try harder too. As I implied before, the Wire is the face of SASS that the internet-using public sees. Some folks may come across this forum without prior knowledge of SASS. We need it to represent the fun-loving, family-oriented sport that exists at matches. Please, let's leave past hurts behind and try to show the love we feel for this beloved sport of ours. After attending Col. Dan's seminar at the Convention, I feel even more strongly than before that we need to focus on presenting our sport in the best possible manner and not dilute that with rants about political issues and rude disagreements. Sincerely, Allie "who hopes she's not being a Pollyanna" Mo

ShadowCatcher
Widder, My suggestion wasn't directed at you, but it sounds like you took it that way. Sorry. The written word is about the worst way humans communicate. Heck, I even typed so fast I called Allie, Annie. SNIP> It's really worthwhile for members who see trouble to help out and report it. It keeps things going along a mannerly path and makes favorite forums "family rooms" more than kindergarten playgrounds. Given the fact that the written word has been with us for some 6,000+ years in almost every culture on the planet, in one form or another, I'd suggest that the sentiment is wrong. Thousands of profound stories and other information have been captured and fully communicated over many millennia, using the written word. The problem lies not in the written word but more likely in those who do not take the time to use them fully. It has become almost institutionalized for so many to write abruptly; smart phones and other portable media exacerbate this tendency. Twitter with it's 144 character limit is symbolic of this. The problem started manifesting itself socially when telegrams, followed by e-mail, came into common use. The tendency to write short clipped notes led to the addition of symbols (emoticons) to facilitate writing in even shorter and less time consuming sentences. In other words folks got too lazy to write well-formed and communicative messages, and their e-mail and other writings read like a series of one-liners and sometimes even just random thoughts being blurted out. Blaise Pascal once said "I have only made this letter longer because I have not had the time to make it shorter". It takes time to write fully communicative letters and postings, those that are short but written in haste usually lead to the kind of communication snafu's we see all too often. And other folks just like to kick the ant hill to see what will happen . .. Shadow Catcher
