Blue Jeans or not

No, and I don't think for a minute that that is what Tex is talking about. I really think that the "Jeans look"= minimalist image is the problem! - IMHO, outlawing "jeans" is going to do nothing to correct the problem.

If you go back a couple (few?) pages and check out Grizzly Dave's pic of his own self, you, I, and most likely Tex, is not going to have a problem. Why, because, while GD is wearing jeans, he has also added onto his costume with scraff, sleeve garters, and braces. Grizzly Dave's outfit is NOT IMHO "minimalist" and therefore, NOT the problem.

Again, I would come back to the idea that simply providing folks with a list of items that they can add onto their "jeans, work shirt, boots and hat" look would go a long ways to raising the bar, and putting the emphasis on costuming as noted in the Shooter's Handbook. Such an addition would fit perfectly with the ill-defined "television western" provided for in the Shooter's Handbook.

Great post. I think you have a great idea and a good grasp on the issue. This should be discussed at the TG summit.

I'm confused, I've read every post and still am not clear as to what is being proposed to ban. Is it all "Wranglers" regardless of their color, or is it just blue colored denim trousers, generally called "jeans"?

Disliked by some, perhaps very few, but by my understanding, yes, demin is froned on. And, don't think saying Levis were period will get satisfaction. Per the SWR TG meeting, if one dresses in Levis denim then they must be dressed as a miner because denim clothing by Levis was made for miners. Personally, I can not understand the logic that a cowhand could not borrow/steal/buy a pair of "miners" jeans to wear on the trail. It is also my understanding that Wranglers, period, is not really thought of as "cowboy". I do understand the jest of the subject about Wranglers, but i believe it is to late for correction. I doubt many a CAS competitor has NOT worn a pair of Wranglers to a match at some point, it not most every match.

WOW... I've been traveling like a crazy person and not following the Wire...I can't believe this thread is still cranking!

I'll be in the Royal Armouries in England later this year...I understand they have an impressive collection of materials, including photos, from the American "Wild West," since the Brits were fascinated with "cowboys and red Indians." I sure hope I don't see any of them crazy denim jeans in those photos! If I do, rest assured I'll immediately go to curators and set them straight!!!

Then I'm gonna buy me a bowler hat, and when I get back I'm gonna buy me a pair of Wrangler jeans and wear 'em to the next match along with my purple boots and a weird looking red shirt I got in Germany. I'm gonna shoot in the "Town Drunk" category, and I'm gonna smoke it!

I thought purple boots were only allowed in Frontier B-Classic Western Cartridge Gunfighter?

FWIW, our hands wore California pants. None of them appear in our old photographs wearing bluejeans. If I recall correctly, miners and tie hacks wore jeans but not drovers. I still wear California pants in the winter but wear Levis in the summer. Although most of my friends and neighbours wear Wranglers, they don't seem to fit me very well.

BTW, all of the above originally had suspender buttons.

I would never think about wearing any thing called California XXX or from California. My own personal boycott against the state.

I can see if someone wore designer jeans with a bunch of bling not to be allowed to wear.

Good ole Levi's have been around since the gold rush.

I bet if Wrangler donated a bunch to the scholarship fund or the chapel, this issue would go away

Well, it all comes down to MONEY. WAH pays the WB a fee for WAH being a sponsor, the blue jeans folks don't and don't care to.

Someone needs to come up with the money to buy Tex out of the Wild Bunch. Then we can have some fresh air in the chronicle.

Precisely. And, well put IMHO. All sports are about the $$$$, because the $$$ is both profitabilty and sustainabiIity. I guarantee some of the original founders are more worried about the $$$$ (profitabilty) and cashing out at some point in the not too distant future. That's when the sustainabilty of SASS will be someone else's (new owners) problem. And,it can possibly it be revitalized with looser costuming restrictions and even including, dare I say it........JEANS. Young people who have no vested interest in 50's and 60s tv will come to the sport at that point. Hell, 4 guns are expensive enough, who needs to drop more cash for big costumes.... hats, boots, cuffs, chaps etc...... The youngsters wanna shoot, and shoot darn fast. I also believe you are right that the WB has made repeated ovetures, for years, to both Levi Strauss and Wrangler to become an official sponsors for SASS. And, have subsequently been told No Thanks, at the beginning, to Pound Sand in later years.

Well a little past history here for those that care.

Two of the Greatest Champions know to this game were Shalako Joe and his brother Badland Ben. Yea I shot with them a few times along with the rest of the family. What a great family it is.

Guess what they wore???? Wrangler Blue Jeans most of the time. Go to the SASS home page and you will see a picture of Joe on the Credit Card with GOD forbid in Blue Jeans.

I guess back then nobody cared what we wore.

If SASS decides to raise the clothing bar, I predict folks will leave in droves. Clubs will leave also, probably still shoot, just no longer SASS affiliated.

The price of getting into this game is quite high, Tex has no business trying to make it even higher by outlawing jeans. Jeans are and have been the pants of choice for cowboys. SASS has always said that if the Duke did it, it is good to go. Why is Tex suddenly against this philosophy? He claims to be concerned with attracting new shooters, and yet here he is leading the charge to keep them away and trying to drive away existing shooters.

I'll agree that Tex likes to stir the pot, he has done it more than a few times in the past. I was at a shoot a few years back when I ran into Tex, I introduced myself to him as one of SASS's cheating match directors. He just walked away, did not even try to justify his opinion. Says a lot!! Maybe it is time for Tex to move on, he would be a good fit for NCOWS and they are welcome to him.
