There is increased talk with many lawmakers, and states on putting Black Boxes in vehicles, state of Washington is in the forefront, and tax people according to how much they drive.

What was hilarious was a caller, in saying the way things are going in taxing people, that ankle bracelets may not be to far behind, and they'll call it a "sidewalk tax". MT

I can say for certain, my landline phone bill, has taxes added, that equal the main charge.

Raising the gas tax would accomplish the same thing but they don't want to be lynched.

Apparently taxes by tech are a lot more palettable to the sheeple.

Partly true. Partly the problem is that you have electrics and other hybrids that are not buying much if any fuel. Or at least less than my big Dodge pickup. So, revenue is down on the sales of fossil fuels because of our need to save the planet.

 

So, buy an electric to save the planet so we can put boxes in everyone's car to monitor actual mileage in order to collect enough taxes.

 

And that is all we'll ever use that information for. Promise!

Actually, they could, and relatively simply: GPS.

 

There are already any number of "smartphone" apps that do this.

 

Imagine a mobile "smart meter" like so many of us now have on our homes for electricity and gas... but it'd measure mileage instead of energy. And they could even have varying rates based on time of travel (higher rate for "rush hour") or even roads traveled (imagine cities collecting their share).

Microchip in your drivers license, passport, whatever. Heck, Why couldn't smart meters be commandeered by the Department of ________ to simply see when you leave home.

They've already got the technology up and working. We have an abomination in Georgia call the Peach Pass lanes. It's a proximity chip on a sticker that goes on the windshield. It monitors how long you travel in the express lane. It then deducts the fluctuating amount from your prefunded account. It would be easy to put them up at intersections and entrance ramps.

Washington State has a monitor pass for the floating bridge on Route 520.

I am not sure how it works but in is somehow reading your windshield as

you pass over. The lie er story behind it is that the bridge is leaking and we

need a new one. Last time they built one, there was a small toll on the bridge

with long lines behind it at rush hour. That said, that even with embezzlements

and all of the other stuff that happened, they paid off the bridge early.

 

Now they discovered a leak and want several dollars a day to pass over

the leaking bridge, one way. I think the State is addicted to money.

Uh, your cell phone is trackable. It can be turned on to transmit by the phone company without your help. As for the car... that kind of technology is in most hign end cars now.

Gas tax is distributed over everyone that buys fuel used on public roads. If they put a black box in every car and tax by miles driven then they can pick and choose who they tax and how much they tax so everyone pays their "fair share".

What I'm saying some will get a free pass just like food stamps, free school lunch, subsidize housing and free health care. Others will pay their "fair share" and for those that get a free ride.
