Trigger Mike Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 I had taken my son along to catch the fox eating our chickens and had taken him along when bow hunting, knowing I would not get anything. Today primitive weapons season opened and children can use a regular rifle. I loaded my Enfield musket and since an AR15 has a stock that can be adjusted to his size I gave him that after he sighted it in. He learned to hit a deer size target at 100. We overslept since the dogs were barking at predators a lot during the night that ran when I went to look. We got there after sunrise. I built a dirt mound for him to lay on and hide behind 100 yards from where I knew deer come out. Just as we got there he saw a deer 150 yards out. Since he lacks patience a quick sighting helped. I told him to shoot at it. In his excitement he forgot I had already chambered a round and rechambered, but the deer did not run. He aimed and fired but missed and the deer ran the other way. I figure the excitement hindered his aim, and was glad he got the shot off. We waited for a while to see if anything else showed up, doubting it would. We finally walked to where the deer had been and saw more trails and so we may try to set up closer next time if we get up in time. It was a blast just the same. I have told him often hunting is not so much about getting anything as it is must being outside enjoying nature, especially if it is with someone you love. He is only 8 so hopefully he has many years to perfect his hunting skills.

Dirty Dan Dawkins Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 Sounds fun. Also sounds like it is time for a coyote hunt.
Trigger Mike Posted October 13, 2013 Author Posted October 13, 2013 Sounds fun. Also sounds like it is time for a coyote hunt. It is time for a coyote hunt. I had hoped to leave them alone since they eat snakes and other things snakes eat, but since they are too familiar with my yard and they did not run from two dogs until I turned on the light they are not timid enough for my liking. They also have helped wreak havoc with my chickens. I need to go coyote and fox hunting and get a permit to thin the dozen hawks that are also eating my chickens.
Waimea Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 Always loved going pheasant hunting with Dad cause we could make as much noise as we wanted to. I did not realize until years later we were actually just helping the dog flush the birds. Glad we had the sense to dive when one was flushed. Never hunted with Dad much after I turned 16. Guess I was too tall to shoot over. Waimea
