Subdeacon Joe Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 http://colesaircraft.com/N1K1-J.html?ref=nf Kawanishi Industries of Japan had long beena major manufacturer of flying boats and floatplanes for the Japanese Navy by the time theWar in the Pacific began. It was therefore notunusual for the specialized company toundertake the design of a high performancefloat plane fighter. Such aircraft were uniqueto the Japanese air arm, since Japan'sempire encompassed thousands of islandsacross the Pacific, and it was a lot easier tobase float fighters in a lagoon than build anairstrip out of the tropical forest to baseregular land-based fighters there. In 1942, Kawanishi engineers presented tothe Navy their float fighter: the N1K1 fighter (or"Rex"). The Navy was so impressed with itsperformance, that rivaled the performance ofland-based fighters of the day in spite of theungainly floats, that Kawanishi was taskedwith developing a land-based variant of thesame aircraft. The N1K1-J (or "George") was the result.
DocWard Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 They have a "George" at the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson. Neat looking plane, and evidently a pretty good aircraft.
