Rootin Tootin Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I just bought a Uberti 66 in 38 special rifle. I have heard that they have loading issues on the carrier if the bullet length is wrong. My question is what is the best length overall? I shoot TCFT 130 grain lead. Thanks.............
Chickasaw Bill SASS #70001 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 RT I load at 1.500 for every thing in 38, EXCEPT , one PITA 92 copy CB
Guest jeweler jim Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I've yet to find a length that it won't run without any problems. Load for my daughter's Spur Marlin which depending on the bullet can be all the way down to about 1.35 and for other guns all the way up to the max length (1.55) and my 66 eats and runs any of them no problems. I suppose some might experience problems, but I've never had any with mine. Only way you'll find out is to load your different bullets and try em out. As they time me with an egg timer I suppose you might not have me running it that hard even with the short stroke. Your mileage may vary.
Grizzly Adams 3674 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Try your current load and bullet. I suspect it will run just fine..... FWIW, my 66 will run everything from 1.41 - 1.47..... It don't like PMC brass, for some reason.....
MARSHAL W.E. BGood SASS 18429 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Hey Rootin Tootin...WE BGood here! The lever rifle rounds I always got from Ammodirect before their tragic ending are/were 1.525 to 1.530 with 125 gr. bullets. I've NEVER had a feed problem with them, even going as fast as I can. Regards, BGood
Three Foot Johnson Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Since the cartridge resting on the carrier block is actually the sole cartridge stop for the next cartridge in the tube, the longest OAL that will function will result in the least wear & tear and the least lever resistance. Shorter OAL's will work just fine though, until they're so short the next cartridge projects past the beveled front of the carrier and stops the carrier from moving up into battery.
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 There is no magic "best" OAL for a '66. Some will run as short as 1.41 and some won't. Your 130Gr TC bullets, crimped to the crimp groove should run just fine. Coffinmaker
Frenchy Cannuck Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Mine loves it, at 1.58", 158gr RNFP bullet. Frenchy
