I know Colt has a revolver that comes with a 44 special and 44-40 cylinder can that be done with the old model vaquero 44 mag as well?

so the cylinder for that pistol will work in my 44 mag. just not be accurate? I ask as I have a lot of 44-40 bp ammo I need to shoot up and sold my rifle already.

Yes it will fit if the overall length is the same. If it is a little to long that is good you can make it shorter.

The problem with the 44-40 Rugers and they made some Blackhawk Convertibles. Is the smallish chambers in the cylinder not the barrel. Most of the 45Colt chambers are to small also .The barrel is the same as the 44 mag .427 so load .429-.430 bullets. Most old 44-40s were .425 so a .427 bullet works for them not the Ruger

All modern .44-40s use the same barrels as the .44 Special/Magnum. (.429) The accuracy problems with the .44-40 Rugers wasn't because of bullet diameter, it was because the cylinders had drastically undersigned throats. (.425) Most people that shoot these a lot have had the cylinder throats reamed. The problem you will have is finding cylinders. Ruger won't sell cylinders so there are very few .44-40 Ruger cylinders on the market. You would probably have more luck finding cylinders from other Ruger calibers (anything except .45) and haveing them bored and rechambered. For the cost you could probably buy a used Ruger .44-40 or Colt clone in .44-40.

Wonder if a 44 mag cylinder can be reamed for the 44-40 cartridge - seems that the throat is already .429" to match the barrel bore ...would that would be good?

The 44 mag cylinder is reamed for a cartridge that is .456" in diameter at it's crimp. The 44-40 cartridge is .444-.443 in diameter in the same place.

Reaming isn't in the cards.

Yup - I was thinking about the shoulder and base diameters of the 44 WCF - .457 and .471 - oops ;) the neck is .443 - no worky.
