too cheap to buy a theatre ticket I wait for movies to come on TV. saw the newer true grit last night. Jeff Bridges does a good job, but he is not John Wayne. I was surprised by how well he did the role. The original Mattie was better. The newer lebeuff seemed good, maybe better than the original as much as I like Glenn Campbell. Duvall was a lot better. The original Tom Chaney was better. The dogfall gunfight was more realistic in the newer one. The original ending was better, but her losing her arm is more likely what happened were it real I suppose. Mattie in her old age reminded me of my wife's old maid aunt. blunt, sour, and not pleasant to be around. Lebeuff not dying seemed more likely in the newer one. overall a good film, but I still prefer the original. The newer one was weird sometimes.

I watched it in the theaters and tried to watch it last night...but by the first half hour I was ticked off by the places that FX chose to end the scenes for a commercial. they picked the most dramatic moments but did not let the scene finish. it was distracting enough that I switched channels to How it's Made and went to sleep.

The new movie follows Charles Portis' book very closely. This looks like his only western. It was a story by and about Mattie. The Cogburn role was no greater or lesser than LeBueff. I recon the role in the book was too small for Duke Wayne; the original movie was made around him.

I like both versions.

Anyone notice how clean his Winchester was, how worn his Colt's were and how wornout everything else was? This was not in the book, but I thought it showed how he focused his care on what was important to him.

I don't try to compare them.

I really liked the new one. It was very true to the book. And watching it with commercials would drive me nutz! Blue Ray if you please. ;)

I did like the new Mattie better. Both are good movies but the Duke is the Duke. Jeff Bridges did a good job though. :)

In the book, Mattie did end up losing her arm to the snakebite.

I like the new one better than the old.

Mainly because I can not stand the girl that plays Mattie in the first one.

Makes me not even want to watch the old one because of her.

I thought Hailee's portrayal of Mattie was excellent.

Had the feeling of what was lost in not having Wayne as the "Rooster" was made up by Mattie's character.

Like both, and have both on DVD.

Me too. Both are great in their own way. When I went to the theater to see the new one, I vowed to not compare with the original.

The Duke is the Duke. Thats the problem with the first movie. You never forget that it's John Wayne. Great actors disappear into their roles so all you see is the character. John Wayne had the same role in every movie he made - he played John Wayne.

Two defferint movies .

Love both versions . :)

Every time I say it I feel like I'm disrespecting the Duke, but I liked the newer one better.

The characters. The music. The cinematography. I just liked it more.

+1

Especially the background music.

The first True Grit was not about the book True Grit.

The first True Grit was a John Wayne movie.

The second, the remake, followed the book, and yes its attention to detail -- the clean Winchester and the worn Colts et al -- were most gratifying.
