Subdeacon Joe Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Really. N E W L O N D O N, Conn., Sept. 8, 2000 A man whose bid to become a police officer was rejected after he scoredtoo high on an intelligence test has lost an appeal in his federallawsuit against the city. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld a lower court’sdecision that the city did not discriminate against Robert Jordanbecause the same standards were applied to everyone who took the test. “This kind of puts an official face on discrimination in America againstpeople of a certain class,” Jordan said today from his Waterford home.“I maintain you have no more control over your basic intelligence thanyour eye color or your gender or anything else.” He said he does not plan to take any further legal action. Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London policeinterviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory thatthose who scored too high could get bored with police work and leavesoon after undergoing costly training. Most Cops Just Above NormalThe average score nationally for police officers is 21 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average. Jordan alleged his rejection from the police force was discrimination. He sued the city, saying his civil rights were violated because he wasdenied equal protection under the law. But the U.S. District Court found that New London had “shown a rationalbasis for the policy.” In a ruling dated Aug. 23, the 2nd Circuitagreed. The court said the policy might be unwise but was a rational wayto reduce job turnover. Jordan has worked as a prison guard since he took the test.
Utah Bob #35998 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Ridiculous. He could have been the next Sherlock Holmes.
Knot Hardly Dunn, SASS 43113 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I've heard some pretty stupid stuff about police hiring practices but this takes the cake.
El Sabre Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 He may have dodged a bullet, though. Think how much fun it would have been to work for such a bureaucracy.
Blackwater 53393 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 My dad was a LEO when we were kids. One of my buddies decided he wanted to be a cop and Dad helped him with the procedure. Ronnie was an inch too short when he took the physical, so Pops put a book of matches wrapped in a restaurant napkin in each of Ronnie's shoes and he passed the second time through. They measured candidates with their shoes on.
Alpo Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 So, if they did not hire women, because women might get married and get pregnant and quit soon after getting costly training. That would be okay too?
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 And you can find departments where officers can only get to certain ranks if they have college degrees and even advanced degrees. What's wrong wiith this picture?
Badlands Bob #61228 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I've had to tell lots of folks that they were too dumb to work here. I don't recall ever turning away someone because they were too smart. Maybe the command staff doesn't want to hire someone smarter than they are.

Well there is an adage that second-rate people only hire third-rate people. It prevents the hirees from competing for the hirer's job
Utah Bob #35998 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Apparently the movie Idiocracy was not too far off the mark in this case.
Smoken D Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 KCPD use to have height requirement. One short guy tried to come on and was rejected. Said he would sue because if he was not too short to have a M-16 and fight for this country in Viet-Nam, he sure was not too short ta be a cop in this country. He was in my class ended up flying the copper chopper.
Gunner Gatlin, SASS 10274L Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 ...and I have always looked at most police officers as to having some of highest cognitive skills in relating to situations and their surroundings in the effort to protect and serve their communities... GG ~
