Cartridge Conversion Cylinders

Howdy:

 

I just bought two Howell (R&D) Conversion cylinders for my Ruger Old Army pistols. THe two cylinders are interchangable on three of the four pistols I have in possession However, on the fourth pistol both are very tight (one being near impossible to rotate). This leads me to believe that the fault is NOT with the cylinders, but rather with the pistol (a pretty early one). SInce I have all the mechanical skill of a toad, does any one have suggestions as to whom I might send this to or a gunsmith (sic, competent) in the St Louis are who might adjust the frame about a thousandths of an inch to accommodate the cylinders? Any info would be most welcom and appreciated.

I also have ROAs with Howell conversion cylinders. You didn't mention where or why the cylinder will not rotate.

If it is the at the barrel to cylinder gap open it up to about .006-.008 by using a file on the barrel..

If all else fails send the gun and cylinder to Howell and they will fit it. Just give them a call.

As you admit not having a good mechanical skill set please pay a smith

 

to properly take a bit off the rear face of the barrel:-) . This is a couple minute job

 

with the correct tools . I have a very good skillset but wouldn't dream of using a file

 

to face the rear of the barrel . I expect some folks could though. I'd be glad to do it but

 

I don't expect you'll be "dropping by" Laurel Md .

THanks for the suggestions. Like I intimated I have the skill set that when I pick up a fork, folks will call the emergency room to bank a reservation. Now, let's see what they would do if I picked up a file...:-0

 

SO, a call to Howell is a good idea methinks. The cylinders fit fine in the other three ROAs, just this one. Ishows some "rubbing" on the rear of the cyclinder cover (the part with the firing pins - looks to me like the recoil shireld on the pistol is a bit out of spec or ????

Measure frt of cyl. to barrel clearance on the pistols that fit, compared to the one that doesn't. Have empty brass in the cyl. to

properly space the cyl in the frame. That should tell the story on the clearance issue.
