Uno Mas SASS #80082
Believe they were Assembly Ships, From a talk: As the bomber streams were forming over England, fighting the usual lousy weather, each division would find and form up on their unit's uniquely colored bomber. The assembly was done in radio silence to avoid tipping off the Germans. However, after the war, it was found out that Axis radar was detecting the bombers pretty much as soon as they started climbing for altitude. The Assembly Ships were war weary, and would land after their organization job was done. Assembly duty was despised as it was demanding, tedious, often boring, and yet very dangerous. The risk of mid-airs was real, as their aircraft was the one that everyone was flying toward.
