We cherish, too, the poppy redThat grows on fields where valor led;It seems to signal to the skiesThat blood of heroes never dies,But lends a lustre to the redOf the flower that blooms above the deadIn Flanders Fields. Forty Rod SASS 3935
When I was a kid everyone wore the poppies on Memorial Day. They were sold for donations (or in some cases simply given away) in every store in town and on street corners. Even us little kids knew what they stood for and were proud to wear them. Haven't seen one now in close to 40 years. They seemed to vanish after we came home from 'Nam. I guess it isn't "fashionable" any more to remember the past. I've always associated poppies with Armistice Day.
