DC: Considering $250K Liability Requirement for Gun Owners

Recommended Posts

This back door approach to gun control is spreading to the state level in some locations...don't be lulled into complacency during this period of relative calm.

Be vigilant and fight it

Boy if that doesn't steam my beans!! Legal Firearm ownership is a RIGHT not a privilege. You can demand insurance for a privilege, but for a 'right'? ....

I have discussed this same topic with several lawyers in our area. The consensus seems to be thus:

1) Only the rich will be able to afford the insurance premiums. This will not stop gun ownership with the poor, because they will only get in trouble if they get caught. So long as they keep their guns hidden, then the law will not bother them.

2) If a poor man gets caught without the proper inusrance (maybe defending his home from a robber, for example), then it is a simple matter of going to court. The offender can't afford to pay any fines imposed, so the gun gets confiscated and the offender gets "public service" time. This happens all the time for drivers who cannot afford auto insurance and have accidents.

The bottom line here is that this law will not have the consequences that the framers intend, and will end up costing the tax payers money in the form of increased court time and court costs that are NEVER recovered.
