Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life
I don't imagine many know what the picture is ............ Plane is an F-18 and what they are removing is the drogue that stabilizes the refueling nozzle.
Hacker, SASS #55963
The drogue broke off the end of the refueling hose getting stuck on the F18s fueling probe. I wonder what made that happen? I wonder how often it happens?
Uno Mas SASS #80082
Looks like the "Junior Argo Of The Year" had too much speed when he hit the drogue, snapping the refueling line. There are other failure modes, but that's the most common. Looks like the flailing hose then broke the canopy. Bad day at the office. Worked with a guy that drove an A-4 Scooter during 'Nam. He broke off the basket in turbulence and the line sent a slug of fuel into the plane's air intake. It got REAL quiet. He managed to restart and stagger back to the boat. Douglas later redesigned the refuel probe with a crank to prevent similar fuel ingestion problems.
