Lots of hat restorers out there... who did you use, and recommend?

I've got a couple of nice, older hats that need restoration. Did any of y'all have a hat restored? Who did you use, and would you use them again??

Thanks!

I've bought several used hats at thrift stores and fixed em up myself. As long as they are a quality fur felt. If they are wool felt ya can't do much with them.

The dirtiest one I bought I removed the silk liner, dunked in a tub of warm soapy water. Took a soft brush to the stains then rinsed. Layed the brim flat to dry overnight. Next day sprayed the hat with hat stiffiner that I bought at local western wear store. Took a tea kettle and steamered it up and reshaped. Turned out really well(It's the hat in my avatar) .

Been cleaning and blocking my shootin' hats for years, but these are some Saturday Night on the Town hats, and I'm gonna treat them to a professional "going over"...

So, the original question remains... "Did any of y'all have a hat (professionally) restored? Who did you use, and would you use them again??"

Thanks,

McC

Talk to David Torres at www.texashatters.com, top drawer outfit. Right in Lockhart, where the Texas CAS championship will be held next week. This shop brought my Dad's old 20X Stetson back to new condition.

Looka here, first post. Howdy, Y'all.

Have not used them. But have heard good things about them before.

I got a old hat I wore 30 years my wife had me stop wearing.

And I have going to have it redone.

This thread is a good reminder to take it down there while we are in Lockhart for the State shoot.

Thanks.

RIght out by you, Blackwater Desparado...hands down one of the best hat makers/ hat shapers/ restorers in the business. See him all the time at shoots and he takes care of his customers. He seems right in the head, too, except he shoots that Holy Crap.

Heck, I'm in Sturgis SD and I'm fixin' to box up and send him my all time favorite evening lid....had it over 30 years and its time for a total overhaul. I could just drive it down to the hat maker here.

Sings blues like anything but a big white man, too! :P Send him a PM.

I purchased a hat from a hatter the was highly recommended and the hat was just okay. When in Las Vegas I visited with D Bar J and shipped him my hat to be completely restored and resized. It came out perfect, IMHO.

No list of Texas hat men would be complete without the Branding Iron Cowboy Outfitters in Lubbock, Texas

They took in my 25 year old Resistol, cleaned it, re-blocked it, put in a new liner and sweat band, made it better than new.

I've been a vendor at many a match. Folks have no ideer how much it takes to vend and shoot. If cowboys had any sense they'd support the folks who show up. They bring the parts, the gunsmithing, the components and the knowledge that adds flavor to any match.

Too often we witness fewer and fewer vendors at matches and don't 'get' that the $10 you might have saved by shopping it 'till you couldn't shave another dime just might cost a SASS member, shooter and vendor a profitable shoot.

Really, what's better....Doing business with your friends or having no friends in business?

+1 on Roy Jackson at Jaxonbuilt (Salmon. Idaho). He built my 100% beaver Quigley (which I love and wear EVERY day) and restored my 30 year old Stetson. Does great work. Great guy, too.

Important question:

Wouldn't restoring an old hat ruin its collector value?

I don't think old hats have any real collector value, unless it can be proven that it belonged to a celebrity or some historical figure such as Al Capone or Buffalo Bill Cody.

Those of you who'll be at the Texas state shoot will want to know that David Torres of Texas Hatters will be on vendor's row at the match on Saturday. He has to remain in his shop in Lockhart on Friday to deliver a large order.

If you send one to Blackwater Desperado be prepare to be insulted. I sent him my REAL cowboy hat (blackleg serum, semen, urine, manure blood etc.) with some interesting holes. He had his mother re-do the sweat band and she said it was the ugliest hat she had ever worked on. I'm supposed to get it back soon in an interesting military shaping.

+1 for Texas Hatters

they have restored to great hats for me. one 20x that i received as a gift years ago and no longer fit, as well an un-dyed 100x beaver I lucked into at a garage sale. Both turned out great. I love that pure beaver, its what i usually wear shooting. Starting to get character now, lots of "Trail Dust!"
