Joe Manchin-D-W.Va. revealed Sunday that Newtown parents admitted to him that the gun bill he had co-drafted would not have prevented the tragedy at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. Manchin appeared on CBS News’ “Meet the Press” with Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Penn., the second half of the team that forged a proposal that would expand background checks on gun purchases. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., appeared on the show earlier, and whenasking about support from other Senate members, host Bob Schieffersaid,“I think you’re going to have a problem with him. He does not seemto think any gun laws, as he put it, work.” Rubio isn’t the only one who feels that way. Manchin spoke of meeting with Newtown parents, and told Schieffer,“they come to you, and they say, ‘We know the bill you are working onright now would not have prevented what happened to our babies.’” Manchin confirmed to Schieffer earlier in the interview that after Newtown, Congress had to do something. This edition of “Meet the Press” aired April 14, four months to the day after Sandy Hook. Link to comment
