Perish the thought that our children should have to see a policeman with a gun! Sheesh...

Remember when we taught our kids to respect police... and to look to them for comfort?

To quote a story I posted a few weeks ago:

as I settled into my desk at work, one of the women in the department was talking to two others.

“Well! My friend was telling me that when she dropped her little girl off at her elementary school, there

was a policeman standing in front of the school with a SHOTGUN!

“Now, isn’t that just TERRIBLE?? My friend was SO upset that her daughter had to see that!”

“A shotgun?” I asked.

“Yes! He had it hanging from his shoulder! How upsetting that the children should see that…”

Hmmm…. So the officer had a long gun of some sort at “sling arms…” Who knows
if it was a shotgun or not – but I’m digressing, and that’s not germane to the story….

So I calmly observed, “Ya know, it’s a sad state when our society has degenerated

to a point where children are expected to be afraid of policemen.”

The other two ladies looked at me with slight nods of agreement.

“Well,” continued the first lady. “I still think it’s just horrible that an armed policeman

was standing in FRONT of the elementary school in the morning!”

I looked at her for a moment, then in as calm a voice as I could manage, said:

“Imagine… Wouldn’t the world be a bit different today if there’d been a policeman
with a shotgun standing in front of Sandy Hook Elementary School a few
weeks ago…?”

Her reaction was priceless.

She glared at me for a moment; her eyes widened and her jaw momentarily

dropped. Then… her expression softened to one of sadness… and with a quiet

voice she simply said…

“Thank you.”

I think a point was made for “our side.”
