Trigger Mike Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 will a black powder frame era 1st Gen SAA hold up firing modern smokeless cowboy ammo? Winchester 250 grn, ultramax 200 grain?

Tom Bullweed Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I would recommend only smokeless in .32-20 in the SAA. The smaller caliber provide ample metal and can be loaded to low pressures and still do well. Colts made before 1894 were made of iron, which is much softer than the steel that followed. The least that I have seen a circa-1880 SAA priced recently was $2400. Save your gun for BP. You can shoot .45 cowboy specials with half the case capacity of the big .45 Colts if you want to reduce recoil and pressure.

Captain Clark Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 I shot my 1st gen with smokeless for along time and never saw any problems. I will say that the loads were reduced somewhat so I didn't push my luck or stress that gun. It still is in good shape, but not getting shot much any more due to the increased value , it is a 4 digit serial number gun. I wouldn't put 250 gr through it, back off to 200 and a light "Cowboy" load level!
