It's been 50 years since the deadliest submarine disaster in US history.

129 people were killed when the USS Thresher sank during a routine test off of Cape Cod.

The Thresher's remains still rest on the ocean floor.

On Saturday, family and friends gathered in Portsmouth, NH to mark the 50th anniversary.

The USS Thresher was built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

A flagpole will be dedicated in Kittery, ME on Sunday.

God Bless all who lost their lives in the mishap, in service of our country and its citizens.

The Thresher disaster led to major safety improvements and expert certification in the design, and construction of our submarine fleet. It is called "Sub-Safe" and is analagous to the flight safety certification process used for our aircraft.
