Short Stirling

The Stirling was known for its relatively low ceiling. In Len Deighton’s fine novel “Bomber” there is a scene where Lancaster crews in a briefing room cheer when they hear that some Stirling’s will accompany them on a raid. They are properly chided by their commander who knows that the poor Stirlings are likely to get most of the attention of the German flack while the Lancasters fly higher in relative safety.
