Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 My math jas failed me and I need some help. I have a square 5/8" x 5/8". I need to make it an octagon with all 8 sides the same. What is the measurement across the existing flats, as in the existing 5/8" flat needs to be divided into ? x ? x ? so I can mark it off before I start removing wood? The angles have to be 45 degrees and I thought it would be 5/32, 5/16, 5/32 but then the corner angles don't turn out the right width. Did I say that right?
Black Harris #154 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 The formula you are looking for is "The Son's of the Squaw of the Hippopotamus" or maybe not BH
Uno Mas SASS #80082 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Is okay, 4T. I'm pretty sure the octagon hadn't been invented when you were born. Here's the formulas: http://www.ehow.com/how_5143453_calculate-length-octagon-sides.html Each side is 0.26 inches in length.

I looked at that catalog (catalogue for out Brit friends) of forulae and almost wet myself. I used to teach Junior high consumer math, but that was before they invented the Metric system (Who, exactly was Metric anyway), and before algebra and calculus (I was 30years old before I found out calculus wasn't a patch of hard rough skin on my heels) and back before Antarctica was more than a legend and France and Florida were still uninhabited. One day I'll post pictures of the project I needed this for.
