The last election held in 1938 after Hitler took power, was a Parlaimentary type election, no one except the Communist party oppossed him. During the War, Hitler postponed any other type elections till after the war. MT

Interesting discussion in light of the news we all read about the actual extent of the Holocaust. Much obliged.

Sidebars:

If you ever get the chance, visit the National Holocaust Museum in Washington. Also, Yad Vashem if you get to Israel. But around the world there are other, similar dedicated venues, perhaps smaller, but still deserve to be visited.

The man whose arm is pictured above lived in Dallas. I met him a time or two and I was friendly with his children for awhile but we lost touch. I know several other Holocaust survivors in Dallas very well, including the founder of the Dallas Holocaust Museum, Mike Jacobs, whom I variably call either my adopted father or, if I'm really having fun with him, my illigitimate father. He is 88 and in failing health, sad to say. Naturally, his wife, who is a Dallas native, gets the same treatment. She's a pistol! It's fun having living parents again! They have 4 children and since we share the same name (thus the parent titles) I'm known as the adopted brother from Mars. His book is incredible; y'all should read it:

As for why some of the "normal" people might do terrible things, think of this prospect, you run a factory. You are offered slave labor for your factory. Your choice really is do you take the "slaves" or fall behind in production quotas and become a slave? Or get shot as a traitor.

But isn't that how men find ways to rise above what is going on around themselves and do something to help the situation.

Think of Schindler's List, the Story of Anne Frank. If those people had just gone on from day to day minding their own business then these true stories would never have happened.

There are people that rise above and become examples to us all.

So you can't save half a million people...can you save 1?

If you can save 1 then how about 2?

Ride easy,

Many such atrocities elsewhere will never be well documented such as what the Japanese did in China, the Armenian genocide, the more recent ethnic cleansings in the former Yugoslavian provinces, the Soviet Union's Gulags and POW camps.

This might be good reading on Japanese atrocities committed and never acknowledging. MT

How many have heard of this astrocity? My father was Born in Pniewei. His parents and sisters were part of this. His mother, died, frozen to the floor of a cattle car in which they spent 9 days without food, and sips of water shared from a bucket which was provided at only railstops.

added:

Dad was a POW, having surrendered his squadron to the British. He did not know, nor find his father and sisters wereabouts till late 1949.

Maybe not part of discussion, but thought some maybe interested in seeing what a town, village looks like after more then 50 years, the war ended.

I can say, after the wall came down, and we eantered East Germany, one could still see destructions from WW2, never touched.

In 1998 along with dad, we visited his town, Pniewie, and the farm he grew up on. Along with one of his sisters, and her daughter and husband.

Picture of his father and sisters during the war farming. He didn't see this picture till he visited in early 90s.

What the farm looks like in 1998. Most the village was the same, yet people lived in them.
