Trail Boss Loads in 45/70 & 38-55

I use Trail Boss in almost all my Cowboy Ammuntion.... Except the 38-55 & 45/70. Both these calibers are in Marlin Cowboys. I was wondering if anybody shoots long range with TrailBoss in these calibers, and how well they like it. Would appreciate it if some pard could give me some input. I know I lose velocity with this powder, but I like the fact it feels so much of the case. PM if you have a good load, thanks.

I use Trail Boss in .45-70. Originally, I had only one gun in this caliber, a Trapdoor Rifle. I found aload listed as "Trapdoor safe" using 4064, and it worked very well.

Until I got a Trapdoor carbine and an Winchester 86 with a 20" barrell.

All of a sudden, this "Trapdoor Safe" load was a painful shoulder thumper.

So, I tried Trail Boss. Using a 405 grain cartrdige and the formula to find the min load for my bullets, the Carbine and the Winchester were suddenly joyfully pleasant to shoot.

And, the accuracy was there. I was able to hit the target at 300 yards with no problems with both guns. I'm sure it'll work even better in the Trapdoor Rifle.

Good luck to you!

I use TrailBoss in a 45/70 with 405gr lead bullets. The maximum recommended charge does what I want to do and is pleasant to shoot. (Marlin '95)

I have a Pedersoli Sharps, and a Marlin, both in 45/70. I was using Hodgdon 4198 with a 405 bullet with the minimum posted loads, and I liked that load combo, but wanted to try Trailboss. With the 405 and min. Trailboss, I quess the velocity was about 950 fps. accurate and low recoil, it felt to low for me. I switched to 300 gr. bullets, and loaded them with min. Trailboss loads, I am not sure if I like this load, I got lots of carbon on the case, it might be because the 300 gr. only have 1 lube ring, where the 405's have 3. I have loaded some 300 grainers up with maximum Trailboss, but I have not shot them yet. If the carbon appears again, I will go back to using the 405's and try using the Trailboss with max. load data, try to get the fps. up to 1100 or so.

Trail Boss and a max recommended load with 405 gr. bullets work very well in Pedersoli Sharps out to 400 yards. I suspect that beyond that you would likely bring rain on a cloudy day. IMR 3031 at med to low loads also delivers similar results. Beyond 400 yards 500 grain bullets and 3031 work quite well. Remember to stay within your powder manufacturers guidelines. Experimenting with new loads equals more range time.

It seems like such a tragety/travesty to put smokeless in either

But then again, that's just me
