Well... you accidentally hit an animal at that range... with a 44 WCF....

You best be ready to do some trackin'... lessin' you don't care.

75% chance... you gonna lose that animal if ya hit him... through a lob-shot...

Ain't no call for it.

Sixgun - this video was made by a SASS member, w44wcf - John Kort at the Ridgeway, PA R&PC. The target is the pig swinger at 300 meters, not yards.

Reuben, all is explained in John's Open Range link above

This October, John was spotting for me shooting 30-30 reloads in a Winchester Centennial 66 - at 500 meters at Ridgway. Sorry, no video. It was toward the end of the day and we were both pooped after a 2 day lever match

Stud:

The javelina at 300 meters that John consistently hit is 9" high or just under 3 m.o.a.

Accidentally hit? I think not, Pardner in the hands of a skilled marksman. BTW, w44wcf has performed other skilled groups

FINALLY made it to the range to try to equal the historic Doc Pardee target with the 44-40 Marlin Cowboy (24").

427098 / SWISS / SPG / CCI primers / REM-UMC solid head button pocket cases.

1st attempt May, 2011 - 30 shots - a bit over 5". It was encouraging though that 25 rounds did group into around 4".

2nd attempt June, 2011 - success! Grin I decided to mount a 4X scope on the rifle for this test since I wanted it to be a true test of the rifle / ammunition combination rather than a test of the rifle / ammunition / and my eyesight. In my earlier years I could shoot iron sights as well as a scope, but not anymore.....

Hey J.B...

I don't doubt ya none... just that my .44 WCF's at 300 yds... may be so dang anemic from my loads, I couldn't even hit the barn, any part. Heck, I would have to angle up 'bout three feet or more over target at that distance (3-4% angle)... and lob mine in like a dang mortor. It kinda would be just like Gus in Lonesome. (Hate to think 'bout that part of the movie... him knifin' his horse to fort off.)

It appeared that the wind was in all directions during this test.

Snakebite, the winds switch all the time at Ridgway - flags at 500m flop every which way and out to a 1000, pockets of calm and then hit a cross wind. It's all reading the grass and the tree branches past 500m

I don't know how anemic the bullet would have been when it arrived at 300 meters but I wouldn't stand there with my trusted catchers mitt and try to snag one! :lol:/>/>

GREAT SHOOTING!

OK... fair enuff... I get yore drift, smart guy.

Well... when a bullet ONLY penetrates 3" deep at 300 yds... I'd say that is anemic.... on a friggin' elk. However, that last shot was on a groundhog... and I had to gallop my horse up... to finish him off. He 'bout got in the hole. In Tennessee, I got the fastest horse in that distance.

Let me say this one more time... 300-yd shots with a .44 WCF... with cowboy ammo FPS speeds... is ONLY askin' for a slow death for one of Almighty's creatures.

You don't care?

Let me say this one more time............No one but you mentioned anything about shooting a live animal at that distance with a .44-40. The OP was shooting at a piece of steel.

Howdy, Pards,

Just stickin' my two centavos in here... (No offense to anybody. And I understand the above discussion involved steel plate targets, NOT hunting.) It has been my experience, personnally and with other hunters, that about the best that can be expected UNDER HUNTING CONDITIONS, and excepting when using scoped rifles at standing game, is about 6 minutes of angle, NOT counting the dispersion of the rifle itself. That said, the "boiler room" of a bull elk is about 18-inches. Since 6 minutes of angle at 300 yds is about 18 inches, the chances of hitting a bull elk in the kill area, versus wounding it, at 300 yards is problematic! Which is why, when I was hunting, I limited my shots at game to under 300 yds. That was with cartridges considerably more powerful and with flatter trajectories than that of the .44-40. So IMHO, the .44-40 would be a 125 yd cartridge, at best.

Happy Holidays, Pards! Godspeed to those still in harm's way in the defense of Freedom everywhere! God Bless America! :FlagAm:

Your Pard,

For fun: Here's a CAS City link on accuracy of the 44 Henry (the 44 WCF's predecessor)

Trail Rider, a 44-40 would not be my choice for big game, even white tails. Any way, the pig is about 3MOA high (9")and John's group is about half as large as the Pig with one flyer a tad high... http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o25/w30wcf/RidgwayOct0844-40.jpg

So, do believe he could from rest with a scope put a one shot in the vitals of the 18" killing area, but again ... not a caliber of choice!
