Seriously, think about how bad it really was in countries and times where armed rebellion or even peaceful rebellion occurred. The situation has to be very very bad before enough people take up arms and overthrow a government. The level of "bad" will be along the lines of "starvation by a majority of the population" or "eminent destruction of a large portion of the population's standard of living" ... and no escape. Take a micro-example and just look at how "gangs" operate. The similarity to government is striking. Then you can guess what it will take for something like a rebellion to take hold.
