Marlin Buckhorn,SASS 51727 Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I know there are better powders and 7/8 oz of shot is light enough. But I have a bunch of WST powder and I am looking for a good performing load with 3/4 oz of shot with this powder. If anybody can be of help with a specific load please send me a PM. I use AA hulls and Claybuster wads. Thanks in advance for your help, Marlin
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Sorry, the manufacturer (Hodgdons) seems to think that Clays is the only one of their powders appropriate to the 3/4 ounce load. That is a very light load. WST and one ounce of shot, now there is a good way to burn up that powder. If you want my favorite for that weight, drop me a PM. Good luck, GJ You can find a few loads for 7/8 ounce lead and WST on Hodgdons on-line loading data. What I see from that data, which only develops about 7500 psi and makes a load that has muzzle velocities ALL above 1300 FPS, is that you can't get to where you want (3/4 ounce light load) with WST - the powder is a little too slow. I'd predict that you would have erratic velocities and a fair amount of unburned powder if you tried WST on that shot weight.

Lonesoms Al SASS37893 Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 If you shoot 38's there's a load in Winchester's 2003 load data. It's a low velocity 158gr load, I've used for several years and still use it, even used it for 130's.
Marlin Buckhorn,SASS 51727 Posted December 5, 2012 Author Posted December 5, 2012 Thanks for the input. I guess if I want to shoot 3/4 oz 12 gauge loads I will need a different powder. Wife will just have to put up with those "magnum" 7/8 oz loads. :lol:/> Marlin
