Buckshot Ben SASS #44252 Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 I would like to have a Cimarron coachgun threaded for chokes. Anyone know how much this will cost... or know of a good gunsmith to perform it? I'm up in Maine, but could certainly mail the barrel. Buckshot Ben
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Most good gunsmiths have the tooling to do choke tubes on most shotguns. The particular "coach gun" you have makes a world of difference, because the barrel wall thickness varies SO much, and even the concentricity of the inner wall and outer wall of the barrel. Some short doubles don't have enough wall thickness to put ANY choke tubes in. Others require the thin-wall choke tubes. Others can take a standard choke tube (but not often for doubles). Doubles are the hardest gun to try to put choke tubes into! So, it usually takes accurate measuring before a gunsmith can guarantee that he can even put in choke tubes. And, that is usually most economically done by a local gunsmith so that you don't waste sending a barrel set to a smith only to have him return them a few weeks later and say "Nope, can't be done". Most SASS gunsmiths don't put in choke tubes, because of this difficulty and the lack of REAL need for chokes in what we normally shoot. Goatneck Clem can, except for the fact that he is in Texas, rather than being local to you. Might want to get in touch with him, though. He may be able to tell you about your particular model and how well it can be fitted with choke tubes. http://www.goatneckclemgunsmithing.com/ Costs can run from $75 to hundreds of dollars per barrel, depending upon who is doing the work. Briley's out of Houston is a premier shop, but their prices reflect it. And, make sure the finished choke tubes do not extend past the end of the barrel. That would be illegal equipment. Good luck, GJ
St. Louis Suomi SASS #31905 Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Howdy: http://www.colonialarms.com/serv.html is a link to one who does Choke tube installation. Not too high priced. But as others has commented, at our distances and what we do with shotguns, a choke is probably not necessary. Of course, you may do as you wish, but I would probably just use the cylinder choke generally advertised in the model shotgun you have. YMMV. STL Suomi
