A bit of a brag about our parish

Parish? Are you in Louisiana?;)

Thanks for sharing, Joseph. Very informative and insprirational.

Thank you, both. It has been interesting watching the transformation from bare cast concrete, to plaster finish, to fresco. Still be quite a number of years to finish it all.

The dome will be interesting to do. What is up there now is a concept by the iconographer. We had scaffolding up for some repair work and he and his assistant took the opportunity to see if their calculations for the figures worked - putting figures on a curved surface apparently is a bit of a challenge. To give scale, the figures between the windows in the dome are about 5 foot tall, the angels surrounding Christ the Pantocrator are about 6 foot tall. Floor to the apex is around 36 feet.

Okie Sawbones, You just told us you are certainly not a person of the Catholic faith.

The catholic faith has it's regions divided up into what is known as a parish. It is in fact the reason that the State Of Louisiana has the parish names and not counties like the rest of the CONUS.

The earliest settlers of white skin to settle into the southern area of Louisiana were the French from Nova Scotia. They were outcast who refused to practice the faith of the King of England but their Catholic faith. For this, they were told to leave the country and sailed down the East Coast of America and into the Gulf of Mexico. They were seeking a place they could be free to practice their faith. They settled into this area and became the descendants of the French speaking people of today that are known as Cajuns.

When it came time to divide Louisiana into different areas, the people did the same as the religion taught them as that is to form a parish. That is just one reason we are such a unique place to live and enjoy life. One of the others is our food which has many backgrounds. We have French,German,Spanish, Creole (Blacks from the Islands who many bear White parents)and so on.

I was born into a French and German family and therefore you are automatically started in the Catholic religion.

Only South Louisiana bears this out as we always say that once you go north of Alexandria, La. You are in Southern Arkansas. Ha!! Ha!!

Nope. I was born into a German and Irish family, hard-core Lutherans. Interesting history on Louisiana -- thanks. I bet Wildcat knows that stuff, being raised in Natchitoches.

Your priest sounds like an interesting one to have leading a flock. I like him.

Yeah, good man. We've known him for about 20 years, from when he was the choir director and a "working stiff" like the rest of us. He's only been a priest for about 10 years. His dad had been our parish priest, but is now "retired" (yeah, right) after over 50 years in the priesthood - and 30 of those as a USAF chaplain. Two or three tours of Viet Nam, a somewhat impressive set of awards (including a Bronze Star with a couple of reps and three Vs). So he has had some good example to follow.
