FN vs. KelTec

Recommended Posts

Some weeks back a pard asked a question about the FN-5.7, and the discussion turned to the merits of the KelTec PMR-30.

Couldn't find the original thread, so I figured I'd use some free electrons to post this article from Cheaper Than Dirt comparing the two.

Interesting. Of course anything stamped with FN's logo will be pricey.

Personally, I'm not crazy about the cartridge though.

Under whelmed by both of them. Ammo for both is too expensive to make a good plinker, most clubs won't let you shoot 5.7x28 at steel targets, so that rules the FN out for most competition and while I wouldn't want to get shot by either cartridge, neither is what I would consider adequate for self defense, although I can see both of them filling a niche role for people who have physical conditions that preclude them from using a larger caliber.

I'm not sold on the 5.7 either Bob. Seems like a solution in search of a problem.

Given the choice, I'd probably go with the KelTec. At least ammo for it can be found at WalMart.

The 5.7 was a solution to a problem: How to penetrate kevlar helmets and light body armor at 100 meters with a personal defense weapon. Unfortunately, the AP ammo is not available to civilians. Without the AP ammo, there isn't much of a point to the 5.7 round other than just as a novelty. Sure, you can get a lot of capacity in a pistol with those little bullets, but as you said, the Keltec PMR provides that too at a much lower cost (both pistol and ammo).

Bad Hand is right - that old Tokarev round is pretty peppy.

Here's the results on a vest ... http://www.brassfetcher.com/index_files/Page1242.htm

And the first post here has more links ... http://forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?83361-Proven-the-7-62x25-Tokarev-Kevlar-Penetration-Issue

And here it is on a helmet (3rd page in) ... http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot29.htm

Seems the boys at FN were either trying to re-invent the wheel, or come up with a round with such limited application that it's almost a niche product with no real practical value.
