His bio on Wikipedia says he came from a family of religious fundamentalists, and his mother had wanted him to become a pastor, so I guess such parts in movies came naturally to him.

How many of y'all remember that he was the original sheriff on "The Rifleman?" James Drury shot and killed him, which led to Micah sobering up and becoming the sheriff.

Sam Peckinpah's dad was a preacher, too, and he liked to put religious elements in his movies. One of the interesting contrasts in Ride the High Country is that between the half-crazed religiosity of Armstrong's character, and the quiet faith of Steve Judd, played by Joel McCrae: "All I want is to enter my house justified."
